Stories of Stewardship - Joan Bates
|
|
In the late summer of 2015, our family experienced a series of major, life altering changes. The last week of August, I lost my job. A week later, my husband closed the gym we owned. Suddenly, we had no income, and we owned a building and land that weren’t generating income either. And then, an answered prayer - we found someone to lease the building. And then, serendipitous timing - after three years, my father’s estate cleared probate and we found ourselves with enough cash to keep things afloat.
Keeping things afloat generally means stripping away any extras, but we knew that giving at church couldn’t be an ‘extra’. Despite a limited income, we knew that we had to make a commitment to giving. For us, it was important to make a pledge, and not just give weekly whatever was leftover. We even set up a bank draft to help us keep that commitment.
Now it’s a year later, and our employment situation is still not fully resolved. But we are ready to make that pledge again. With a job prospect on the horizon, we’re also planning on increasing that pledge. We’re not at a 10% tithe, but we know that by increasing our giving incrementally each year, we’ll get there.
Over the course of this year, we’ve learned that giving is possible, even in a less than ideal situation. We trust that God will take care of us and we’re willing to make that commitment. And we’ve found that the example our parents gave us about giving is something we’d like to carry on. As parents, it’s important that we show our children that God is always our first priority. We are so thankful for His many blessings, and we give in thanksgiving!

Common Prayer & Cornbread

Whether you've visited once or have a preferred pew, if you are ready to move deeper into community and fellowship at St. Timothy's, this luncheon is for you. Join us Oct. 16 at 12:30pm for a BBQ lunch (vegan and vegetarian options available) to meet the staff, vestry, and leaders of different ministries, learn about who St. Timothy's is as a parish, and how we work to grow in faith and service.
Church is more than just being on a membership list, and if you seek to become part of our family at St. Timothy's, or simply find out if we are the kind of family you would like to join, we hope you will share our table.
Good food, good conversation, and good times to be had. See you there! Please RSVP to Katie Harper at

The Abraham Project - Karley Chamblee
|
Hello everyone,
This is Karley, the TAP intern from Alabama. I have met many of you, but please come see me if we have not yet crossed paths!
First, I must say that the church community at St. Tim’s has been incredibly welcoming to the TAP interns as we have been adjusting to a new location, and in some respects, a new lifestyle. We have received smiles, hugs, food, help, and warm spirits that have been helping us through.
My work placement is Healthcare Access, a small nonprofit healthcare social agency that coordinates care for those who are uninsured or underinsured. Some of my duties are to assist patients in their health insurance needs and applications and to help coordinate care. This job is teaching me about social work and health literacy (shout out to Katie Harper for being a very helpful coworker/friend).
Being outdoors has helped smooth the transition in coming to Winston-Salem. I am comforted by the fact that I am within walking distance to a park where I can feel refreshed and at peace each day before or after work. Also, living with Emily and Jemi is one of my favorite aspects of this experience—they are so full of life and eager for what the “veram vitam” brings. Speaking of that, the TAP retreat we spent with Becky on Friday was a day of Real Life where we could spend time both in solitude and in community, reflecting on our time thus far and remembering what and who really matters.
Again, please come see me if we have not met! We are looking forward to becoming more involved at St. Tim’s and growing spiritually in our time here.
With love,
Karley
