"Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help."

-Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

From Mrs. Rowley

Last week I joined the other Arlington diocesan principals on retreat in Priestfield Pastoral Center in West Virginia.  Please know that I kept the St. Ambrose School and Parish community in prayer.  Just a reminder that we have switched to winter uniforms.  For a reminder of our dress code please follow this link to our website:  http://s3.amazonaws.com/stambrose/stambroseschool/wp-content/uploads/Dress-Code_6.8.2016.pdf.

We have many upcoming exciting events.  Please mark you calendars for Trunk or Treat on October 28, and don't forget to submit your recipe for our family cookbook, to support our gala.  As I mentioned last week, I intend to cook my way through the book by the end of next summer!  Thank you to all who have contributed to our parish food drive.  We will collect through the end of this week.  We have several service projects planned for the remainder of the school year.

Updates from STEM Club

Last week the STEM Club had its first meeting and we had a great time exploring science! Dr. Neelem Singhal joined us and performed a sound experiment. The students were given string cups and explored what happened when different materials were used as the string. We examined wool, cotton and plastic. We were surprised to find out that we could easily hear each other with the plastic string cup and learned that sound depends on two factors, density and elasticity. The students then learned more about sound propagation, elasticity and the elastic properties of materials. Cool!

Our next experiment involved soda, Poprocks candy, and balloons. I asked the students what would happen if we mixed the Poprocks into the soda; the overwhelming response from the younger students was that it would explode! Well, safe to say, we didn't blow up Mrs. Rowley's stage, but we did learn a little about carbon dioxide and blew up balloons with the extra volume of CO2!

Finally, we learned about Sir Isaac Newton and his 3rd law of physics. Newton's 3rd law addresses equal and opposite reactions. We illustrated the 3rd law by using balloon rockets. The balloon gains its propulsion by pushing air out, which in turn propels it up the string.

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) - Viral, Bacterial, Allergic, Irritants

Diagnosis

A doctor can often determine whether conjunctivitis (pink eye) is caused by a virus, bacterium, or allergen based on patient history, symptoms, and an examination of the eye. Conjunctivitis always involves eye redness or swelling, but it also has other symptoms that can vary depending on the cause. These symptoms can help a healthcare professional diagnose the cause of conjunctivitis. However, it can sometimes be difficult to make a firm diagnosis because some symptoms are the same no matter the cause.

It can also sometimes be difficult to diagnose without doing laboratory testing. Although not routinely done, your healthcare provider may collect a sample of eye discharge from the infected eye and send it to the laboratory to help them determine which form of infection you have and how best to treat it.
