OCT 2016 / NEWS FROM THE NICKEL PLATE TRAIL - PERU, IN

Adopt a Segment of the Trail

Without the help of volunteers, we would not be able to maintain this wonderful community resource. This work brings along with it a great sense of accomplishment, knowing you have contributed to keeping these trails open for all to enjoy!

All that is required to adopt a trail segment is that you be at least 18 years of age and have a genuine concern for the well-being of this wonderful resource.

Individuals, families, school and youth groups, scout troops, churches, community and service organizations and businesses are all encouraged to adopt segments of the trail to monitor and maintain.

Each adopter regularly visits their segment to check the condition of the trail and perform basic trail maintenance. Rule of thumb: Do what you can, and report needs you can't deal with.

Visit our website  for more details or to select a segment to adopt.
MAC Expansion - Show your Support

A project is in the works to expand the NPT. Through grants from Indiana Bicentennial Nature Trust, Hoosier Heritage Trust and donations made toward the project, land has been purchased to expand the trail from Bunker Hill to Strawtown Pike.

If you would be interested in showing your support of this expansion, we would love to receive a support letter from you. These letters help us to raise funds and to make our case with elected officials. Support letters can be emailed to us or

Volunteer Highlight - Harry and Betty Denham

Harry and Betty Denham have been volunteering with the trail from its very beginning and continue to be a valued asset today.

Harry retired after 47 years with the railroad in 1997, and he and Betty traveled the United States for the next three years. In 2003 he was recruited by Mike Kuepper, along with five to six other guys, to help with the clearing of the trail from Wallick Road to Bunker Hill.

He continued volunteering, almost daily, from that time on until 2008, helping to build both the north and south sections of the trail. Throughout those years, he helped clear the land, pave the trail, convert 17 bridges, supervise crews from the prison who were brought in to help clear and build the trail, and many other tasks.

Betty provided many meals for those working on the trail and has helped with fund raising for the trail.

Today Harry and Betty help by advising the board, inspecting the trail and helping to remove large trees. Harry also serves as the unofficial engineer on the board.

It is because of the dedication of volunteers like Harry and Betty that we have this wonderful resource. We can't thank them enough.

You can find more pictures of Harry in the Making of the Trail gallery on our website.

Indiana bicentennial torch made its way down the trail on Oct  5

On October 5th
the Bicentennial Torch made its way down the trail starting at CR 1500 N. in Rochester. It traveled south on the trail, worked its way through Peru, picked the trail back up again at Main Street and continued south along the trail to the end of the trail at US 35 in Kokomo.

A total of 10 people carried the torch along the trail.

Nickel Plate Trail, Inc. is a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization that receives its funding through grants and private donations. Grants that are received are for the building of the trail only and not for maintenance.

Because of this, supporting and maintaining the Nickel Plate is a community effort. We greatly appreciate your financial support, and we are thankful for our donors and our volunteers. Without these many helpers, we would not be able to maintain this wonderful community resource.
