September 15th - General Body Meeting
Our first General Body Meeting was a great success. With over 25 members in attendance, we solidified our 2016-2017 Calendar of Events and approved this year's budget. Our members are excited about this year's goal to provide two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each at our annual Scholarship Luncheon on February 17, 2017.
September 17th - DOUBLE WHAMMY!
We started the morning off at FSU College of Law with first and second year law students at the
Intro to Legal Profession Seminar.
Our esteemed panel included Tallahassee's brightest and finest attorneys and judges. The students were engaged. Kudos to C. Erica White for leading this effort and serving as our moderator.
The Annual Barristers Crab Boil was truly AMAZING. This event, was attended by over 50 members and friends. The chicken, ribs, mac & cheese and CRAB was plentiful; second only to great fellowship amongst our guests. Guests included local attorneys, judges, and law students. Did you miss it? September 26th - Pizza and Dialogue at Griffin Middle
At a recent football game, Coach Stanely of Griffin Middle School silently protested the National Anthem along with other coaches and several team members by taking a knee behind the bleachers during the opening song. In a continuous effort to keep the dialogue going and educate the community, several Barristers met the football team at practice to discuss their thoughts on the protest. Not surprisingly, the students answered hard questions with thoughtful answers:
"We took a knee in silence to bring attention to how we want to be treated better" - a 7th grader stated.
September 29th - Know Your Rights Seminar at FAMU
Criminal Justice students at Florida A&M University gave their full attention as our panelists, Mutaqee Akbar and Aisha Chaney, gave an outline of Do's and Don'ts during police encounters. The very informative seminar raised legal and ethical questions regarding police practices and citizen responsibility. Special 'Thank You' to Barrister Ruby Barr for making an appearance. The support of our members is always appreciated.
