Law Enforcement - Member of the Multidisciplinary Team

A1 Core members of Tulsa's multidisciplinary team (MDT) include law enforcement. Tulsa County encompasses several different law enforcement agencies, all of whom routinely utilize services for children at the Center. This includes police departments in the city of Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Glenpool, Jenks, Sand Springs, Skiatook, Collinsville, Sperry, Bixby and the Tulsa County Sheriff's office.

While DHS investigates cases that involve a parent/guardian and the safety risks being in their home might pose to a child, law enforcement investigates whether or not the abuse rises to the level of the need for criminal action. Law enforcement investigations may pertain to third party perpetrators (individuals outside of the child's home) or they may "share" an investigation on a family with DHS. When working with the same family, law enforcement and DHS jointly work their cases, sharing information and coordinating services to that child and his/her family to minimize trauma. This type of collaboration between DHS and law enforcement and the rest of the MDT is invaluable as the end result is an outcome that determines what is in the best interest of the child.

Stay tuned! Next week we will talk about another member of the Multidisciplinary Team, and how we all work together to stop the hurt and begin the healing.

Finding Words Oklahoma

A2 Finding Words Oklahoma is a training program that provides child abuse professionals a comprehensive introduction to a forensic interview process to improve one's ability to effectively and reliably interview children about abuse. From October 10, 2016 thru October 14, 2016, Rose Turner (CAN's Managing Director) participated as a faculty member, in providing this training to child abuse professionals, from across Oklahoma. Ali Kern and Jessica Scott (Child Specialists at CAN) attended as participants.

There were 34 professionals participating in this training which included child welfare, District Attorney, law enforcement and mental health personnel from various multidisciplinary teams across the state. The five-day training was conducted at the JD McCarty Center in Norman, OK and included lecture materials, role-play interviews applying the techniques learned, as well as a written test. Participants found the training to be very worthwhile and effective in learning new techniques to apply and incorporate into their local multidisciplinary team response to child abuse and neglect.
