THE CONTENTMENT CHALLENGE 35-days to increased happiness
|
|
|
"...for I have
learned to be content with whatever I have...
I can do all things through him who strengthens me." Phil 4
Dear Friends~
Contentment: the state of being happy and satisfied.
How is the Contentment Challenge going? On Sunday we handed out Contentment Prayer key tags- if you missed out, pick one up this week and join the challenge! Listen to the message online and learn more about it- or ask me!
Paul reminds us that contentment is not a natural state but rather a learned state. In most all aspects of life, learning takes practice. On Sunday you were challenged to practice contentment by considering how and why you spend money. The challenge? Between now and November 20
th, PAUSE each time you are ready to spend money and consider why you are spending- and if your purchase is a need or a want. Pray the contentment prayer*- and then reconsider your purchase, perhaps wait for 24 hours. By doing this, you were challenged to consider your relationship with money- and to re-consider what makes you happy:
- Do you live with a mindset of scarcity or abundance? Fear or joy?
- How much is ENOUGH?
- What does your spending say about who you are and what you believe?
- Are you an emotional shopper? Do you purchase without thinking? If you use a credit card- do you realize that you are spending money? Try using cash- that's REAL money.
This week I am challenging myself- each time I pray the Contentment Prayer and chose NOT to spend, I place part of my "savings" in a Buck A Day envelope. It is Tuesday at 9am and my envelope has $13 in it. On Sunday I will release this money to God, placing it in the offering basket to help build the foundation of ministry at Hosanna- and 10% will be given away beyond our doors. I wonder how much will be in the envelope- and if I will miss the money or the stuff I would have purchased. I will pick up a new envelope for next week.
Join me in the Contentment Challenge. Keep practicing (not perfection)!
See you at Church!
~Pastor Linda
*Contentment Prayer: Lord, help me to be grateful for what I have, to remember that I don't need most of what I want, and that joy is found in simplicity and generosity.

All Saints' Memory Table
|
|
We are preparing a Saints' Table in the Great Hall for ALL SAINTS' Sunday, November 6,
to remember all those in our lives who have died in the faith- people who have helped shape our own lives of faith. Who is that for you? Might you have a piece of memorabilia (a picture, a poem, something else)- that you might be willing to share- to bring to the table- as together we remember? We will begin
collecting these items
Bring your ALL SAINTS memorabilia as we prepare our worship space for ALL SAINTS' Sunday on November 6. Questions? Contact Pastor Linda or Pastor Jen.

Healing the Heart of Democracy-
The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit
by Parker Palmer
The author looks with realism and hope at how to deal with our political tensions for the sake of the common good.
Palmer writes:
For those of use who want to see democracy survive and thrive - and we are legion-the heart is where everything begins: that grounded place in each of us where we can overcome fear, rediscover that we are members of one another, and embrace the conflicts that threaten democracy as openings to new life for us and for our nation.
Read the book, then come for the discussions at 7pm on Tuesdays:
Even if you missed the first 2 discussions, please join us for the final 2 discussions below.
- October 18: chpt 5-6
- November 1: chpt 7-8
