What's in the Marion County Transit Plan?
The Marion County Transit Plan proposes a 70% increase in IndyGo service and features shorter waits, longer hours, more efficient transfers, and every route every day. In addition, rapid transit lines would be built and operational. In this and upcoming newsletters, we'll focus on one aspect of the plan.
Every Route, Every Day
Under the Marion County Transit Plan, every bus route would operate every day of the week. Currently, IndyGo operates fewer routes on Saturdays and even fewer on Sundays, and buses come less often on the weekend as well.  This can be challenging for people who work, visit family, or go to worship on the weekends. When routes don't run, people without cars may not get where they need to go.

People without cars can experience major isolation without access to transit, making 15% fewer healthcare trips, 59% fewer shopping trips and restaurant visits, and 65% fewer trips for social, family, and religious activities than drivers do.*

The following image compares the current schedule with the Marion County Transit Plan's proposed schedule.
  • A blank rows means that route does not run that day.
  • The length of rows are the hours per day routes operate.
  • The colors represent frequency.
    • Red: bus comes every 15 minutes or better
    • Blue: bus comes every 30 minutes
    • Green: bus comes once every hour

The November 8 ballot question on transit is advisory. If the measure passes, the Indianapolis City-County Council will decide whether to enable the transit tax and at what rate (between 0.1% and 0.25%). The Marion County Transit Plan as proposed assumes a 0.25% income tax rate.
