Dear Parents,

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending all the Masses at St. Catherine's to thank our parishioners for their support and invite families to come to our Open House on Sunday, November 6.  Being at all the Masses gave me the opportunity of meeting a number of our alumni.  It was such a joy to chat with them and learn that they are doing very well at the high school and college levels.  All of them expressed their gratitude for the education they received at St. Catherine's.  These young men and women are confident, happy, and faith-filled.  They are involved in Life Teen, serve in a number of parish ministries, participate in the Catholic Club of their public high school, and receive the sacraments regularly.  Many come back to SCS to visit with their teachers and help: a few came to help Mrs. Khan with her music classes recently, and Coach Katie (7th/8th Grade Girls Volleyball) is a member of our class of 2012.

The example of our alumni reflects the tremendous efforts which our teachers and staff put into practicing and living our school mission daily: Nurturing children through a journey in education anchored in the tradition of Catholic faith: united with family, spiritual formation, scholastic excellence

Last Friday, during our professional development day, our teachers, staff, and I spent the entire morning examining our school mission.  It was important that we took this time to reflect on our school mission because we know that, in order for a community to grow and thrive, all its members must think and act according to its mission.

Focusing on the three pillars - "united with family, spiritual formation, scholastic excellence" - our teachers and staff brainstormed new ideas to support our mission.  Among the many strategies are the following: "Pray for the families of our students (by name) each day, strive to know our students personally and deeply so that we may understand and serve their needs, reach out to and communicate with parents good news and compliments about their children, continue to explore and utilize differentiated instruction in the classroom in order to reach all learners, create lesson activities which maximize student engagement, swap carpool duties with partner teachers so that more teachers and staff can meet and greet parents during carpool time!"

In the weeks and months to come, we will continue to strive to live our mission actively, mindfully, and enthusiastically.  Thank you for uniting with us in this endeavor.  We want our mission to form the minds and hearts of our young people so that they, too, like the SCS students who have gone before them, will grow to become strong young men and women with character and grace who are willing to set the world ablaze with the love of Christ.

With prayers,
Sister Mary Jacinta, O.P.

Carpool Safety Reminders
In order to ensure the safety of our children, please be sure to observe the following:
  • For parents who volunteer after school (extracurricular activities, basketball): please refrain from sending your students to retrieve items from your vehicles during carpool (3:10-3:30).  It is very dangerous for children to cross over carpool lines and travel through the parking lot without being accompanied by an adult.  Our teachers and staff are focused on the vehicles and students who are boarding their vehicles - they are not able to monitor additional students.
  •  Please remember to refrain from using your cell phones while in carpool, especially as you drive.
Uniform Reminders
  • Please remember that "socks must reach at least one inch above the ankles" and that "low cut socks are not acceptable."
  • Acceptable accessories include "one small necklace or a chain with a cross or medal.  Girls may wear a single pair of earrings only and these may not be larger than a dime.  Dangle or loop earrings are considered hazardous for school and are not permitted."  In particular, please know that bracelets are not worn.
Guidance Counselor
Please know that we are actively seeking to employ a suitable professional for our Guidance Counseling position.  We have several candidates who are in the process of being interviewed.  In the meantime, if you discern that your child may benefit from guidance counseling, please contact Sister Mary Jacinta or Mrs. Glavin.  Thank you.

Notes from the Nurse:

The Im portance of Hand Washing
Does i
t se
em as if your child is sick all the time? In the early school years, your child's immune system is put to the test. After
all, young children in large groups are breeding grounds for the organisms that cause illness.  Fortunately, we can teach our children healthy habits that help them keep free from illness.

Many childhood illnesses are caused by viruses. All it takes is a single child to bring a virus to school for the spread to begin. Consider this common scenario; a child who has a cold coughs or sneezes in the classroom. The children sitting nearby inhale the infected respiratory droplets and the cold spreads. Or perhaps a child who has a stomach virus uses the toilet and returns to the classroom without washing his or her hands. Illness-causing germs might spread from anything the sick child touches to other children who touch the same object and then put their fingers in their mouths.

This is why hand-washing counts!
Frequent hand-washing is one of the simplest, and most effective, ways to stay healthy in school. Remind your child to wash his or her hands before eating and after using the toilet, blowing his or her nose, or playing outside. Children should soap their hands for as long as it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song two times, or roughly 20 seconds.

Over the next week, our teachers will be reviewing proper hand-washing technique with their classes.  Please reinforce this at home as well.  We are hopeful that by focusing on hand-washing, we can be proactive in fighting illness in our school during the winter months to come.

Thank you and God bless you!
