ASCS Collecting for Haiti

Dear All Saints Families,

Last week we very successfully collected and delivered hurricane relief items to the Bahamas. Check out our social media for pictures and information.  This week we are collecting for Haiti.  Haiti was particularly vulnerable since areas had not be stabilized since the 2010 earthquake.  Many Haitians were still living in shack covered with tarps.  The death toll continues to climb. Many of our Diocese of Palm Beach priests have direct ties to Haiti. Father Yves, who leads the Notre Dame Catholic Mission, will accept our collection and get them to a Diocese in Haiti for distribution.

Here at All Saints Catholic School, starting tomorrow, Tuesday, October 18th, and ending Friday, October 21st, we are collecting items by the gym from 7:00 - 7:50 a.m. You may bring food, clothes of all sizes, water, diapers, feminine products, medical supplies (i.e. antibiotic ointments, bandages, pain relievers, alcohol/ hydrogen peroxide), flashlights, and batteries, tarps, hammers and nails, and blankets. Thank you in advance for all your help.

Sincerely,
All Saints Catholic School Students

Principal's Letter

Dear All Saints Families,

I want to begin by thanking the hard work and generosity of the students and their families who headed the collection of hurricane relief items for the Bahamas.  The items were safely delivered to St. Michael Catholic Church.  This Church is in the hardest hit areas and with a great need for supplies in the surrounding area.  We now start our collection for Haiti.  Our contact for this collection for Haiti is Father Yves of the Notre Dame Mission.  He has family in the diocese most affected.  Once again the supplies will go to a known entity for distribution.  We are blessed to have such a wonderful community.  As Pope Francis calls us for giving during this Year of Mercy, we are answering his call.

Last week finished the first quarter.  Report cards will be sent in students backpacks this Friday.  Only first and second semester report cards are mailed.  The in-between quarters are sent home through the children.  Please remember to sign up for parent teacher conferences to be held on Wednesday, October 26th.  Please come to the meetings with an open mind for discussion about your child's strengths and weaknesses.  It is the job of a parent to love your child unconditionally and see the good in all they do.  However, our conferences are for building a team with our parents for the education of all our children.  None of us are perfect in all we do.  We all have things that must be improved.  Not getting an "A" in a subject is not a reflection of poor parenting or teaching.  All our students need to set goals for improvement.  Too often in today's society grades are everything to parents, even at this age.  However, we must remember our children are so much more than a grade on a piece of paper.  Straight A's are not a guarantee of a kind, giving, and well-balanced adult.  We need to look at the bigger picture of how we want to raise our children.

This Thursday, October 20th, I will be leading a discussion at 6:00 PM in the gym in the area of high school preparation.  This seminar was given two years ago and I received favorable feedback.  I originally sent this out to 7th and 8th grade families.  However, 6th grade families are free to join as well.  It is an opportunity to discuss what we do here to prepare our students, how to select a school that best suits your child, and what things to look for about the schools you are thinking about.  Please note that the Palm Beach County Public Schools has a "School Showcase" at the South Florida Fairgrounds from 4:00 - 8:00 PM, on Tuesday, October 18th.  A few years back I attended this showcase.  Within the main hall, all choice, magnet, and special program schools have a table. This includes primary, middle and high schools.   The event is very crowded.  It will definitely help you to pick up some information, but the in-depth information is achieved by going to a school's individual open house.  I think it may be a starting point for some of our families; however, you will need to get more information beyond this showcase. If it is a tough event to attend, I do not think it is critical to attend.

All Saints will NOT be having school on November 11th.  We will be closed that day.  The state has said we can forgo the 180 days of instruction as our hours of instruction surpasses state requirements.  Palm Beach County Schools have decided not to make up the hurricane days as they surpass the hours requirement as well.  In checking our hours of instruction, we greatly surpass our state requirements.  We do have a high academic requirement at All Saints and as a result, we have made up one day, but will not make up the second.  Thank you and enjoy that long weekend in November.

Have a wonderful week and thank you for your support in all we do at All Saints Catholic School.

Yours in Christ,

Jill Broz

Volunteer Opportunities

Hospitality:
We need to organize a committee that would help set up (food/decorations) and run special events or meetings at the school.  This would allow the talent and creativity in our parents to shine during events.  Further, it would be so nice to have the presence of parents at the events to represent families in our community.  Examples of such events would be Open House, Grandparents Reception, Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, HSA General Meetings and Pastors' Meetings.  Please contact Patty Rabideau if you are interested in joining this committee or have any questions,  561-385-1659 pattyrab@comcast.net.

Auction:
Planning meetings are held every Thursday after drop off in Room 109. The auction chairs are looking for donations and sponsorships.

Helping Hands:
This program runs throughout the school year and is held on Wednesday mornings after drop off in the cafeteria.  This program assists the teachers by doing prep work for upcoming classroom projects or assignments.  There is also an opportunity to take work home.  This is a great way for full time working parents to receive volunteer hours.  Contact Rita Berley at  301-509-0729  or  rita.berley@handslawllc.com  if you would like to help or have any questions.

THANK YOU TO OUR MANY VOLUNTEERS!
