The World Affairs Councils of America is delighted to announce a special dinner with Tom Friedman  on Friday, November 18, at 6:30 - 8:30 PM . Internationally renowned author, reporter, and columnist Thomas L. Friedman has been awarded three Pulitzer Prizes for his journalism and he has written six bestselling books, among them From Beirut to Jerusalem and The World Is Flat. (Full bio.)

This event follows the official conclusion of the Conference (see agenda) - and it is free for members of the 1918 Society. Others who wish to attend this special dinner may purchase tickets here for $100 each

At dinner, Friedman will discuss his new book, to be published in November, "Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations." After the Q&A, he will sign books, which WACA will present as complimentary gifts to all attendees.

October Cover to Cover will feature author Jonathan Tepperman on his new book The Fix: How Nations Survive and Thrive in a World in Decline, on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 2:00-2:30 PM ET.


Jonathan Tepperman is Managing Editor  of Foreign Affairs magazine. He began his career as a speechwriter at the UN in 1994, before pursuing journalism and taking editorship positions at publications such as Newsweek International. Tepperman is an accomplished contributor to a  variety of newspapers and magazines and the co-editor of se veral books. New Middle East Program Series

With generous support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, WACA is delighted to present a fresh Engage America Speaker Series on American Policy in the Middle East for a New Administration. Eight World Affairs Councils will participate in the program which is designed to inform the American public about policy options in response to opportunities as well as the multiple interconnected crises in the Middle East. By bringing together policymakers and experts from the U.S. in public forums hosted by Councils, members of the public will benefit from balanced and high-level analysis to which they would not otherwise have access. 

Kickoff event:
Beyond Convergence: World Without Order

The William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies and The Institute for National Strategic Studies, Center for Complex Operations, present a Hemispheric Forum and release of the book "Beyond Convergence:  World Without Order",  at the National Defense University in Washington, DC this  Tuesday, October 18 , at 1:30 - 5:00 PM.

Leading experts and contributing authors will discuss new developments in illicit networks and the efforts to combat them as part of the release of this edited volume published by National Defense University (NDU) Press.  Admiral Kurt W. Tidd, U.S. Navy, Commander of U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) , will address the audience on USSOUTHCOM's efforts to combat illicit networks in the Americas. 

The Hemispheric Forum will be broadcast live and recorded for people who didn't have the chance to attend in person.

Future of Korea 2016 Program Series

The World Affairs Councils of America is sponsoring an Engage America Speaker Series on the  Future of Korea in collaboration with the  Korea Economic Institute. The program is focused on broadening and deepening the understanding of Korea and the U.S.-Korea relationship among opinion leaders and academics. The centerpiece of the program is a three-person panel discussion, usually consisting of one representative each from the U.S. Department of State, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, and KEI.

Israel and Its Counter-Terrorism Strategies 

Alaska
The Alaska World Affairs Council will host a luncheon event  Friday, October 21, at 12:00 - 1:00 PM  with Israeli diplomat and author Ishmael Khaldi on Israel's counter-terrorism strategy. Council CEO Lise Falskow, who participated in WACA's Israel Leadership Mission in June, will moderate the discussion. 

Before joining the Foreign Ministry in 2004 as Israel's first Bedouin diplomat. Khaldi served in the Israeli Defense Forces,  Defense Ministry, and the Israeli Police. 

Khaldi has served in the ministry's Arabic Media Departmen t and the North American Division; he was Israel's Deputy  Consul General in San Francisco (2006-09), a policy   advisor to Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, and Counselor for Civil Society Affairs in the Embassy of Israel in London (2012-15).  In 2010 he published his autobiography, A Shepherd's Journey .
WAC New Hampshire's Foreign Policy Forums

new hampshire The World Affairs Council of New Hampshire will hold a series of foreign policy forums featuring the Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate, in partnership with Southern NH University College Republicans, NH College Democrats, and NH Young Democrats. 

Senator Kelly Ayotte (R)  will take the stage on Wednesday, October 26 and Governor Maggie Hassan (D)  will speak on Friday, October 28 The forums, exploring each candidate's views on America's role in the world, will be moderated by Civic Scholar Dean Spiliotes with questions from attendees. The series will educate voters about current global challenges as part of the Council's mission to promote understanding of world affairs across the state.
