IN  THIS ISSUE
Northville Educational Foundation is excited to announce our eighth year of funding Innovative Grants for NPS staff. A total of $20,000 has been allocated for multiple grants up to $3,000. A minimum of $5,000 of that has been designated for innovative technology use.

In addition, a total of $10,000 has been allocated for Cooke School Innovative Grants through a donor-designated gift.

"Innovative" is defined as "something new or to make changes in anything established." NPS' teaching staff is provided an opportunity to apply for a grant that will allow them to implement a new project that compliments their curriculum and bring what the students are learning in class to life. Grant recipients will get to experiment with what they are teaching and the students benefit by learning in a new way.

Northville's teachers want to go the extra mile for their students and are excited about opportunities to bring new tools into the classroom. Last year, NEF received 34 applications from accross the district (many of which included teams of teachers). We were able to fund 20 of the projects for a total of $27,893.

The projects included such resources as 3D printers for both middle schools, virtual reality goggles, LittleBits electronic pieces and much more.

NEF has funded nearly $105,000 in Innovative Grants in its first seven years. We are excited to provide up to another $30,000 this year and look forward to seeing the creative ideas coming from this year's applicants.

Applications close out on November 21st and winners will be notified on Monday, December 12th.

Innovative Grants are funded through corporate support from Community Financial Credit Union and Michigan Educational Credit Union; contributions from NPS staff; and donations from community members. If you would like to help support our Innovative Grant programs, click here.
ThirtyQuestions30 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR KID INSTEAD OF "HOW WAS YOUR DAY?"

When I picked my son up from his first day of 4th grade, my usual (enthusiastically delivered) question of "how was your day?" was met with his usual (indifferently delivered) "fine."

Come on! It's the first day, for crying out loud! Give me something to work with, would you, kid?

The second day, my same question was answered, "well, no one was a jerk."

That's good...I guess.

I suppose the problem is my own. That question actually sucks. Far from a conversation starter, it's uninspired, overwhelmingly open ended, and frankly, completely boring. So as an alternative, I've compiled a list of questions that my kid will answer with more than a single word or grunt. In fact, he debated his response to question 8 for at least half an hour over the weekend. The jury's out until he can organize a foot race.

Questions a kid will answer at the end of a long school day:

What did you eat for lunch?
Did you catch anyone picking their nose?
What games did you play at recess?
What was the funniest thing that happened today?
Did anyone do anything super nice for you?
What was the nicest thing you did for someone else?
Who made you smile today?
Which one of your teachers would survive a zombie apocalypse? Why?
What new fact did you learn today?
Who brought the best food in their lunch today? What was it?
