School News

This is a reminder to parents that we are over half of the way through the first quarter so please be sure you check your students grades!

Tomorrow is financial aid night for senior parents who need assistance or information about FAFSA paperwork.


Guidance


De Sales University Annual Poetry Festival is on October 28th.  Students have  a chance to compete for a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to DeSales.  Entry  forms are in Guidance.  Deadline to submit poetry is Tuesday, October 18th.
 
Attn 10th graders:  Do you see yourself as a leader here at Sun Valley High  School?  Are you interested in continuing to develop your leadership skills?  If so, consider submitting an application to attend the HOBY Youth Leadership Conference.  This is a wonderful opportunity for a 10th grader from our school to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning, and motivation-building experiences.  The seminars will be held this upcoming summer at Villanova University on June 23 - 25, 2017.  Applications will be reviewed and one student will be selected to attend from Sun Valley.  Stop in Guidance to pick up an application and information.  Submissions must be received by October 28, 2016 or sooner.  Questions?  Please see Mrs. Im in Guidance.
 
ASVAB testing will be held on October 25th from 7:30 - 11:30 a.m. for students in grades 10-12.  Students need to sign up in Guidance if they wish to take the test.  Sign-ups will close on October 19th.

Students please be sure to check your Naviance accounts for college information, updates, and visitations.



Financial aid night will be October 18th at 6:00 p.m.


PSAT will be given to all Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors on November 5th. 

All Freshman are currently being registered for Naviance. Please keep checking for updates.

Academics

Parents we are at the mid point of the 1st quarter.  Please be sure you check your students grades to help ensure your students academic success. If you have any questions about any particular grade or class please contact that teacher as soon as possible.

A new grading scale has been adopted for the 2016-2017 school year.  

The new grading scale and class weighting is posted on the main Sun Valley web page under the "Have You Heard" section.


Athletics

 
Sun Valley Football did a tremendous job recognizing our local emergency responders on Friday night, while the Cheer team had a "pink out" for breast cancer awareness.
 
Sun Valley Volleyball raised awareness for ALS on Saturday, raising over $1200.  In addition, they had a huge win over Penncrest which will have significant playoff implications.
 
We're looking forward to celebrating Boys Soccer Senior Night on Tuesday and Girls Soccer Senior Night on Thursday.
 
Save the date:  November 18th, first practice for winter sports.  All athletes are expected to have a PIAA physical prior to the first practice.

PTL News

Sun Valley Craft Fair - Saturday, October 22nd, 9:00am-3:00pm

Your favorite craft makers are back along with new people so come on out to the fair!   Volunteers are still needed for this event.  Click on the Sign-up Genius and help the PTL make a success event for our big fall fundraiser.
 
October Membership Drive Drawing:

Our latest membership drive promotion is now up on our Facebook page. We are working together with the Aston Rebels hockey organization and we have a Family Fun Pack for one lucky winner. Not on Facebook member?  That's ok!  Fill out the Membership Form by October 31st and you will be entered in the drawing.  Good Luck!

Announcements

Attn all seniors/juniors:  All students need to purchase their parking tags before Friday, October 21st.  Please bring a photocopy of your driver's license, insurance card, registration card, along with $25.00 to the Athletic Office before next Friday to receive your hang tag.  Make sure all documents are current and not expired.  Effective Friday, October 21, no student is allowed to park in the parking lot without a hang tag.
 
Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti last week, and we are looking for clothing donations. Please bring in any new or lightly used clothing and shoes that you do not need or would like to donate and drop off by today in room B-255.
 
Attn Speech and Debate Team:  Please pick up your permission slip from either Ms. Phelps or Ms. Wessel this week.  Permission slips are due next Wednesday.
 
Attn all juniors interested in going on the Virginia Trip:  The first payment is due Wednesday, October 19th.  See the Class Events & Activities page for info.
 
Reminder to any senior who had their senior portrait taken somewhere other than Barksdale:  Please bring a CD copy of your yearbook pose to room B-40 by today, October 14th.  Any questions, see senior, Jayna Suter or Mrs. Maxwell.
