IS Traffic Safety Challenges and Concerns

As we gear up for another busy Monday morning in the IS parking lot, a few quick reminders regarding traffic flow and safety:
  • Please always give the yellow and metro busses the right-of-way around the corners of the parking lot.  We've had four close calls in the last month, with drivers trying to beat a bus around the curve, and just narrowly avoiding a collision.  For the safety of our bus drivers and the students in their care, please yield to the busses at the curves!
  • Please talk with your students about the dangers of jaywalking.  This is a concern in our parking lot, but also off-campus.  We've had students who walk to school, or get dropped off far from campus, crossing busy roads outside the safety of a crosswalk.  One driver reports a serious issue at SE 7th Pl, near the Lake Hills Connector intersection, where students come out of a trail and cross right near a bend in the road.  Please remind your student to always cross the street at a crosswalk, for her or his own safety.
We also received this message from a neighbor last week:  I have lived on 129th Ave. SE for 17 years.   I certainly understand that the morning traffic is not pleasant for any of us whether we live in the neighborhood, attend International School or both.  There is bound to be traffic no matter what for the sheer reason that we have a neighborhood with a school in it.  There is something different about the traffic this year.

Please note that although we are all in a rush to get to where we are going in the mornings, the rules of the road still apply.  This year, unlike years in the past, there have been MANY occasions that either myself or my husband have tried to get out of the neighborhood to take our own children to school and people have pulled into the intersection of SE 7th place and 128th Ave. SE.  If there is no room to clear the intersection before you pull onto 128th, please patiently wait until there is room and DO NOT BLOCK THE INTERSECTION!  You are not going to get there any quicker unless you leave a few minutes earlier from your home. BLOCKING THE INTERSECTION IS NOT LEGAL!  Please be patient and remember that we all have places to be and people to see.

IS 2016 Parent / Teacher Conferences

Mon. 11/7 & Wed. 11/9
In the I.S. Commons and Library

The goal of Parent / Teacher Conferences  is to briefly discuss how your student can make sure they are fulfilling their potential, not a place to solve major issues. To discuss major issues please email the teacher directly to make an appointment with them for a different day and time.

Each teacher conference will be limited to 5 minutes per teacher. If you desire a longer conference or cannot come to conferences, email your student's teachers directly to make an appointment with them for a different day and time.

Conference times are apportioned at approximately 58 students per conference period. If you are unable to attend on your assigned day please try to trade with another family to keep the numbers balanced per session.

Time is short; please prioritize which teachers you really need to see based on where your child may be facing challenges. You do not need to see each teacher.

Student participation and attendance at the conference is highly encouraged.

Prior to your appointment, please PRINT STUDENT REPORTS AT HOME from the online grade reporting system.   Printed reports will not be available at school.

Middle School and High School Students, it's time for the PTA's annual Reflections Program. Entries are judged on creative ability and interpretation of the theme. The Reflections Program is structured for PTAs to recognize students at the local, council, state, and national levels. This year's theme is: "What Is Your Story". Only original works of art are accepted. The six areas are: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video, and Choreography/Dance. All entries with an attached student entry form are due to the school office by: November 14th, Monday.
