WNV Dead Bird Hotline closes soon--response requested
Local Agencies:

The West Nile virus Dead Bird Hotline will close for the season on Friday, Oct. 14 at 4:30 pm. Samples from dead birds collected on Oct. 14 may still be sent to the laboratory for testing. Throughout the Fall/Winter, callers to the hotline will hear a message encouraging them to visit the website (www.westnile.ca.gov) and to fill out an online report. Online reports will generate an automatic email response with either dead bird disposal information or instructions for having the carcass picked up for WNV testing. We will also review every internet report and follow up if necessary. If your agency plans to test birds throughout the Fall/Winter season, CDPH staff will coordinate suitable carcasses for pick up.

Please reply to this email if you would like to continue dead bird pick up and testing during Fall/Winter and indicate which species you will accept. Otherwise, all zip codes will be closed to dead bird submittals.

Dead bird testing during Fall/Winter: RNASound cards may continue to be shipped to the lab for WNV testing (the University of California, Davis Arbovirus Research and Training (DART) laboratory; address listed below). RNASound card turnaround time depends on the number of samples received, so please allow for longer turnaround times of up to two weeks. U.S. postal service deliveries to the lab occur three times per week and may also be a factor.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Leslie
