When we were assembling in the South Mesa Trail parking lot, I was struck by how quiet it was. It must have taken over a minute for me to hear my first bird sound. That is one reason August birding can be challenging. Now that nesting and defending territory is mostly over, the amount of song is reduced significantly. Listen for contact and flight notes. There are still great things to be seen, it's just that you have to work for them in August.

Black-Chinned Hummingbird
Twenty years ago, our sighting of a black-chinned hummingbird in Boulder County would have brought out the birding masses. It is still a noteworthy sighting, but it's not enough now to bring the masses. That is how much things have changed since I first started Saturday morning bird walks 25 years ago. This bird (or one just like it) has been on this trail and even in the same tree for at least three years. In fact, when we went by the tree on our first pass we didn't see any hummingbird. I was a bit put out, but I figured maybe it was too late in the year for it to be hanging around its old haunts. However, on our return trip there it was as expected.
