E-Arkive The Electronic Newsletter for Ark and Dove

NEW DATE for Campfire Worship and Church Picnic! All are invited, Sunday, October 9th starting at 5:00 pm for fun, fellowship, music and worship!

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR JON

Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

This weekend there are plenty of opportunities to worship! We will have our regular opportunities to gather at 9:30 and 11 am for great music and a thoughtful sermon. At 10:45, you are invited to reflect on the service in the Marshall Room. Believe me, this will enhance your spiritual journey.

Then, at 5 pm on Sunday, we will share a meal together. Please bring your favorite dish! After that we will gather near a campfire prepared by the Boy Scouts to worship God with hope. Please bring friends and family.

All of this worship is crucial to the life of our community. But our gatherings of praise should always lead us to pursue God's paths in the world. The prophet Isaiah harshly criticized a worshiping community that was satisfied in their spiritual practices, while others suffered around them. Isaiah says that right worship includes sharing bread with the hungry and bringing those who are homeless into our houses.

Well, we are taking Isaiah seriously this week. With our hearts full of worship, we will invite those who have no home into our house. Beginning Monday, we invite 25 men to stay with us for a week. We will provide shelter, great food, meet needs, and share in the joy of community. We still need people to help with the various tasks that will make this place home. For example, we need a few able persons to stay overnight with our guests. Please contact Sue Hanburger or the Hisle's (see below) for any questions.

Our worship life involves songs, sermons, prayers, and sacraments. But it also involves serving those who are poor and homeless. Let us worship this week!

Peace,
Jon

VERSES AND PRAYERS

But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. --Jeremiah 29:7

God of justice: Forgive us for the ways we have been all consumed by our own welfare. We often forget that for us to truly thrive others must thrive--even the poorest of the poor. Our well-being is caught up in the well-being of others. On this day, may we be more mindful of the poor and oppressed, the judged and rejected, and the despised and disregarded. May we be about their welfare. Thank you, O God, for connecting us so deeply to one another. Amen.

Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well. --Luke 17:19

Merciful God: Faith is a gift from you. On this day, may your Spirit grant us even a measure of faith that we might find ourselves well on this day. Help us to trust in your ways, that we might live more fully. Teach us to hope in you, that our wounds might be healed. Lead us as we follow in faith, that we might advance your kingdom in this world. Amen.

TES FOR YOU

Is your child interested in being a part of the Christmas musical?  Please have them join us during rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 6:00-6:40 in the Sanctuary.  There is no rehearsal next week, the week of Winter Relief, but we will resume on October 20th.

I hope you will come and hear our anthem this Sunday at the 9:30 service called Talitha Kum.  It is for choir, piano and percussion and it is AWESOME!  You may even see some foot-stomping.

Love,
Rebecca

Happy Friday!  I hope that everyone is enjoying the beautiful fall weather, and is getting ready for the rain this weekend.  I can't wait to share the music that the band has been working on in the next few weeks, and am happy to say that we are taking part in the Winter Relief effort this upcoming week by serving the men on Tuesday.  If you have been on the fence about participating, don't give it a second thought and sign up.  You'll be glad you did!

God Bless,
Mark

CAMPFIRE WORSHIP ~ NEW DATE

S'MORES FELLOWSHIP AND CHURCH PICNIC! The annual church picnic and campfire worship (followed by S'more's) has been moved from Saturday to Sunday, October 9 at 5:00 p.m. As an added bonus, in between the two events, the Band will play some of their favorite selections from the Irish Christian band Rend Collective. Hope to see you there! Paul Doughty, padough@verizon.net.

REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION
GOING DEEPER IN WORSHIP  Worship is the center of our community. We invite you to go deeper in your worship experience by joining in reflection and discussion at 10:45 am on Sundays in the Marshall Room. Under the leadership of Betsy Baer, we will enhance our worship experience through contemplation and conversation on the music, scripture, liturgy, and themes of the day. Please join us in this wonderful opportunity to deepen our faith. Contact Betsy Baer (bbaer126@aol.com) or Jon Nelson (jgnelson1985@gmail.com).

Catch the Joy!

CATCH THE JOY!
CATCH THE JOY! 2016-2017 As we pray for our church and our ministries we want to remind you that this  Stewardship season there will be only one Catch the Joy pledge card mailed to your home.  We are moving the mortgage and the major repairs expenses into our Mission and Ministry fund. The Session is asking that you combine your building fund and mission and ministry fund pledges into one pledge and pray about raising this one pledge by one percent of family income.  This is what we need to accomplish the quality of ministry we all want.

Looking ahead, we will establish a  Capital Improvements Savings Account in June of 2017.  Our goal still is to expand the lobby, build new offices and add two classrooms, but we will only do this when we have the funds on hand or the pledges in kind to move forward.   More news on that this coming spring! Amy Carskadon, Discipleship Elder, amy.carskadon@gmail.com.

Mission

RADICAL HOSPITALITY AND WINTER RELIEF
RADICAL HOSPITALITY SUNDAY IS COMING! We have the chance to practice radical hospitality on Sunday, October 16. That Sabbath day is the only day that our Winter Relief guests are welcomed to remain in our church home for the entire day. It is the only day that they can safely rest from the stresses of their lives.  Can you imagine how very precious it is for our guests? Will you join us in providing radical hospitality?   Volunteers are needed for various shifts going from 7am - 11pm on Sunday. The sign-up sheet is in the lobby.  Any questions or if you want to volunteer by text or email, contact Linnie at 410-999-7892 or Lkgirdner@comcast.net.
