ASCS Collecting for the Bahamas and Haiti

Dear All Saints Families,

Hurricane Matthew has affected us all in some way. One of the countries that has been impacted seriously is the Bahamas.  We know many families at All Saints have some kind of connection with the Bahamas. They have a beautiful country and are in need of our help and support because of the effect of Hurricane Matthew. We have come up with the idea to give back to our neighboring country for the wonderful experiences and memories it has given to so many of us.

Here at All Saints Catholic School, starting tomorrow, Tuesday, October 11th, and ending Thursday October 13th, we are collecting items by the gym from 7:00 - 7:50 a.m. You may bring clothes of all sizes, water, diapers, feminine products, medical supplies (i.e. antibiotic ointments, bandages, pain relievers, alcohol/ hydrogen peroxide), flashlights, and batteries, tarps, hammers and nails, and blankets. If you have new items that were purchased for your storm preparation and were never used, please consider donating these items to our collection. The supplies will be taken over by boat to the Bahamas on Friday, or as the weather permits. It will be distributed to the families who need our help. As Catholics, we have a moral obligation to help our fellow man and share what we have with those less fortunate than us. We need all your help and support to collect as many items as we can over the next three days. Thank you in advance for all your help.
We will be collecting for Haiti next week!

Sincerely,
All Saints Catholic School Students

Principal's Letter

Dear All Saints Families,

We were truly blessed to have not received the feared weather and resulting damage from Hurricane Matthew.  For our new families to Florida, I know this was a very stressful time in planning for the storm.  It is almost anti-climactic when a storm then misses us.  However, please know that a small unpredicted turn in one direction can result in a devastating storm.  For us longtime residents of Florida, we get ready for every storm.  We have to protect our families and properties.  Unless Governor Scott tells us otherwise, we will have to make up those lost two days.  By Florida State Statutes and our accreditation requirements, we must be in school 180 days.  Early release days do count as full days.  We had 181 days scheduled in our 2016/2017 calendar which gave us one flex day.  Therefore, we will use that flex day and schedule another make up day.  Our Diocese has instructed us to use the November 11th teacher workday as a make-up day.  I will verify this by the end of the week. I also want to let families know that all lunches pre-ordered for Thursday and Friday last week will be given credits to the account.

This week we are learning and practicing the virtue of Stewardship.  Stewardship is receiving the gifts God has given us, tending them responsibly, and sharing them with others so we can give them back in increased measure to the Lord.  Our middle school students approached me today to establish a fundraising effort for the collection of items needed for both the Bahamas and Haiti.  Stewardship is alive and well within our All Saints community. Starting tomorrow, All Saints Catholic School through student leadership, parental assistance, faculty support, and community help, we will begin by collecting items for the Bahamas.  Next week we will collect items for Haiti.  The items collected for both weeks will be the same. We are making our efforts count by connecting with individuals who are able to get the items directly to the people who need it.  The administration is very concerned about collecting items, only for them to be held in bureaucracy or redirected to other areas in the countries.  This week's items will be put on boats this weekend and taken directly to hardest hit areas for distribution.  Next week we are connecting with Haitian priests in the Diocese who know of local schools or locations that are in the greatest need and ways to get the collections there.  Please see the flyer at the top of this page for further details.  Give items for one or both islands.  However, we must keep the weeks separate.  It is so vital we teach our children that service and stewardship is a way of life.  We are so fortunate to live in a country and a city that is financially stable with relief funds for natural disasters.  We are called to help others who have so little.  Thank you for your support.

Yours in Christ,

Jill Broz

Volunteer Opportunities

Hospitality:
We need to organize a committee that would help set up (food/decorations) and run special events or meetings at the school.  This would allow the talent and creativity in our parents to shine during events.  Further, it would be so nice to have the presence of parents at the events to represent families in our community.  Examples of such events would be Open House, Grandparents Reception, Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, HSA General Meetings and Pastors' Meetings.  Please contact Patty Rabideau if you are interested in joining this committee or have any questions,  561-385-1659 [email protected].

Auction:
Planning meetings are held every Thursday after drop off in Room 109. The auction chairs are looking for donations and sponsorships.

Helping Hands:
This program runs throughout the school year and is held on Wednesday mornings after drop off in the cafeteria.  This program assists the teachers by doing prep work for upcoming classroom projects or assignments.  There is also an opportunity to take work home.  This is a great way for full time working parents to receive volunteer hours.  Contact Rita Berley at  301-509-0729  or  [email protected]  if you would like to help or have any questions.

THANK YOU TO OUR MANY VOLUNTEERS!
