FEATURED SAINT:  St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis Assisi was born Giovanni de Bernardino to a wealthy merchant in Assisi, Umbria, in 1181. As a youth, St. Francis lived a lavish life of wealth, feasts and joy. Because of his rich lineage, he was kidnapped and held in captivity for a year before he was ransomed. Soon afterward, he set out for battle but that night God spoke to him and told St. Francis to return home. For the next 25 years, St. Francis spent time in prayer and asking forgiveness for his sins.  His turnaround was extremely inspirational and influential in his time - and continues to be an inspiration to this day. St. Francis' birthday is celebrated September 26 and he is often remembered for his commitment to the Lord. The Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi is celebrated on October 4.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Blessing of the Animals & Mass at O'Hara this Wednesday
This Wednesday, October 12, will be O'Hara's Blessing of the Animals and St. Francis Mass. All students are required to wear Uniform Mass dress. Please read below for more details.

Our Blessing of the Animals will begin at 8:30am. Students will gather on the playground; parents & visitors should meet their student(s) outside. The west playground gate will be open for parents to walk around if they are bringing an animal for the blessing. Once everyone is assembled, Fr. David Cullings will begin the morning in prayer and then students will line up for their animals to be blessed. (Students are welcome to bring a stuffed animal for a blessing.) Following the blessing, students go directly to the gym for Mass.

We welcome you to bring your pet to school for a blessing, but ask that you please  read and adhere to the following g uidelines:

-Please have small animals in carriers and large animals on leashes.
-If your child has animal allergies, please take necessary precautions.
-Parents need to bring animals to the back playground where they will meet their students for the Blessing.
-Please do not bring any animals into the school building.
-Following the Blessing, animals must go back to cars or be taken home.

St. Francis Mass will begin at approximately 9am.
We welcome parents and visitors to join us for Mass. If pets are left in cars for Mass, please take care to make sure they are safe & secure inside a vehicle. Pets may not be brought into the school.

Mass Dress Requirements
All boys  must wear a white button down shirt and a uniform tie, with khaki or navy uniform pants. Shorts are not permitted.

All girls must wear one of the following:
Uniform skirt & white button down shirt
Uniform dress
Uniform jumper with white shirt underneath
No pants or shorts are permitted

Please remember, students will not be permitted to change clothes after Mass. The disruption and delay to our school day caused by the large number of students changing clothes necessitates this rule. (Students that have PE on Wednesday will be permitted to change clothes; and boys are permitted to remove their ties to store them in backpacks.) Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Students released at 2:45pm - please don't use Middle School exit
If you have students heading to the fields after the 2:45pm release, please have them exit the building through the front doors only. The middle school area is still in school and it is very disruptive if parents and students exit through the middle school doors. Thank you for your help, we appreciate it!

Invitation for O'Hara Parents from Marist - Speaker on November 3
Each year, Marist Campus Ministry sponsors a guest speaker who can bring to their student body - and sometimes to their adult community - a faith perspective that motivates and inspires. This year's speaker is  Roy Petitfils , an internationally known speaker, who joins his private counseling background with his experience in Catholic youth ministry, teaching and administration, and school counseling. Marist has asked him to speak on issues of adolescent mental health - stress, anxiety, depression, life changes, eating disorders, self-harm, and others - with Marist students, student leaders, staff, and parents. They have also extended an invitation to O'Hara parents. Numerous studies have emphasized a growing awareness of mental health issues plaguing teens today, and of the importance of adult support. Therefore, on Thursday evening, November 3, from 7-8pm in the Marist gym,  Roy will be addressing parents to help them consider some of the complexities of raising and caring for teenagers in today's world. Please CLICK HERE to view the informational flyer. Please contact Rick Martin at Marist with any questions: 541-681-5474.
