Composting at School
October 2016
Educate: What better way to educate your students than with an experience?

A merica Recycles Day is next month, making it the perfect tie-in for one of our interactive field trips  or classroom programs. Don't delay; contact Jenny Lohmann or call 513-946-7736 to schedule a memorable experience for your students.

Reduce: Paper Towel Waste

Do you cringe when you see students (and some adults) use too many paper towels? These stickers can help reduce paper towel waste. Simply affix a sticker on each paper towel dispenser as a gentle reminder and watch reduction happen.  Email Cher Mohring or call 513-946-7737 to request your free stickers
Reuse: Costumes

Is your school having a costume party this month? Ask your PTA to hold a costume swap and teach students how reusing saves resources and money. Involve the students by throwing a costume fashion show.
Recycle: Trees

Teach your students how nature recycles leaves and other plant material into compost, a nutrient-rich soil amendment that helps plants grow. Composting fall leaves is a fun and easy hands-on experience to teach your students about life cycles, decomposition, the food web, soils, and more. Use our resources to bring your lesson plans to life. Apply for a Compost Kids' field trip or schedule a "Composting 101" classroom program.
Remind your school community to recycle clean, dry paper. Print and hang this  recycling poster  around your school and share  these paper facts during announcements and in newsletters:
  • Even though paper is made from trees, a renewable resource, the process of making paper also requires a lot of energy and water.
  • Recycling 10 magazines saves enough energy to power a light bulb for 12 hours.
  • Paper that has been in contact with food (paper plates, cups, etc.) and paper towels are not recyclable.
  • Paper fibers can be recycled about seven times.

School Waste Audit

Help! We are looking for up to nine lucky schools to participate in a waste audit.  A waste audit, you ask? It's a way to see what your school's garbage is made up of to help develop a plan for reducing, reusing, and recycling.

If you are interested or would like more information to see if your school qualifies to be in the audit program, email Cher Mohring or call 513-946-7737.
