October, 2016  Edition

From the Director's Desk

It is hard to believe that autumn has arrived and the leaves have started to turn.  We celebrated the new season with the very popular and successful Autumn in Asheville. Everyone left that evening full from the delectable dishes our talented culinary and baking and pastry students created, and thanks to so many of you, important funds were raised to support those students and the A-B Tech Foundation.

Our annual Universal Campaign launched this month and it offers an opportunity for A-B Tech employees to support our students, as well faculty and staff initiatives. Over the past year, A-B Tech employees have pledged over $47,000 to support not only the scholarship and faculty development programs of the A-B Tech Foundation, but also the many programs supported by United Way and Eblen Charities. Their generosity ensures that needs can be met on campus and in our community.  When we all work together to support A-B Tech, United Way and Eblen Charities, our community is stronger and more vibrant.

We thank you for your continued and growing support of A-B Tech. You are leaving an important mark on campus through your kind generosity.

All the best,
Amanda

The Don C. Locke Library

A-B Tech Library Dedicated to Don C. Locke in Ceremony on October 17

A-B Tech Community College will dedicate its campus library in honor of Don C. Locke, former trustee for the college, at 1 p.m. Monday, October 17 in the Ferguson Auditorium on the Asheville campus.

Locke, who passed away June 8 from complications due to lung cancer, served on the A-B Tech board since 2010, most recently as vice chairman. The board of trustees voted unanimously on June 6 to rename Holly Library in his honor. The library will carry numerous books Locke had written.

"Dr. Locke has been a friend of this college and more importantly a friend of higher education for several decades," said Dennis King, President of A-B Tech. "It just seemed to be an appropriate thing to do."

Locke retired in 2007 from UNC Asheville as director of Diversity and Multiculturalism. He also served as director of the Asheville Graduate Center and director of the N.C. State University doctoral program in Adult and Community College Education at the Asheville Graduate Center.

In 2015, he received the community service award from the Martin Luther King Association of Asheville and Buncombe County. He was also awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2016.

During Locke's tenure as a trustee, he served as chairman of the search committee during the search for a new president. "Dr. Locke served A-B Tech through his knowledge and experience from a lifelong career in higher education, as a champion for diversity and as a mentor for many of our students," King said.
Autumn in Asheville 2016
On September 29, 2016 the A-B Tech Office of College Advancement, in conjunction with the College's Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts, Hospitality Management and Craft Brewing programs, hosted its annual Autumn in Asheville fundraising event, raising funds for student scholarships and the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Departments. The sixth annual fundraising event recreated the feel of the vibrant downtown restaurant scene on a beautiful fall evening. A drumming circle welcomed the guests as they arrived. A strolling fiddler and the caricaturist greeted them as they made their way through the 18 different mini-restaurants created by the students and faculty, located on the grounds and throughout the kitchens of A-B Tech's Brumit Center for Culinary Arts and Hospitality.

Sincere thanks go to the consistently amazing work of the Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts, Brewing, and Hospitality students, faculty, and staff; wonderful decorations by Brinda Caldwell (Director of Community Services Program at A-B Tech); the Foundation Board of Directors and its Event Committee; and last but not the least the great support of our student scholarship recipient volunteers!

Scholarship Recipient Spotlight

Women in STEM Scholarship recipient Lanita Smith will travel to Washington, DC later this month to participate in this year's ATE Principal Investigator's Conference. The Conference is presented by the American Association of Community Colleges with the support of the National Science Foundation, and will host approximately 800 people. It will focus on issues related to advanced technology education. Lanita applied for and received an additional scholarship from the National Science Foundation to cover her travel costs to the Conference.

Only 50 students from around the country were selected by the NSF to receive funds. In her application essay Lanita wrote, " I will become one of the few African American female Mechanical Engineers of my generation; but I hope my example will encourage others to embrace this field. My interest in engineering has not wavered; in fact, it has grown over the three years I have pursued my Associate's Degree. When I graduate from A-B Tech in May 2017, I want to transfer to University of North Carolina-Charlotte to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. My dreams are vast. I want to lead design teams in discovering new ways to deliver power and other utilities to consumers in a cleaner, more sustainable way."

Lanita will be presenting on Friday, October 28. More information about the Conference can be found here.

Poinsettias for Scholarships!
It is hard to believe, but the holidays are coming up quickly. The Asheville Breakfast Rotary Club is beginning their annual poinsettia sales for scholarships fundraising event. Last year the Asheville Breakfast Rotary Club was able to provide funds for three $1,000 scholarships to A-B Tech, as well as scholarships for UNCA, which continues their almost 30 year history of providing scholarships for local students. If you are interested in purchasing poinsettias for your seasonal decorating or as wonderful gifts, this would be a great way to support A-B Tech students and the wonderful work of one of our local Rotary clubs.

Here is a link to the order form; please note sizes, prices, colors. Order instructions are on the form including order detail, pick up date and location. Payment is preferred with the order. For an order of 10 or more poinsettias, members of the Asheville Breakfast Rotary Club can deliver within the Asheville area.

On behalf of the Asheville Breakfast Rotary Club, thank you...together, any purchase adds up to much needed support for the students of A-B Tech.
