Dear Community,

Visitors to the North Penn School District's (NPSD) administrative offices at the Educational Services Center (ESC) will see a change the next time they visit. As we are doing in all of our schools, we recently completed minor renovations at the ESC to make the building more secure. This includes a buzz-in system for visitors who are not NPSD employees.

Our buildings are your buildings and our community is always welcome in our schools and offices. However, as we continue to ensure the safety of our students and staff, certain security upgrades have been necessary. The ESC is no different.

Over the years, we have made significant physical changes to our buildings to better secure them and we have revised our procedures in the event of emergencies. As I write this letter, in fact, there is a practice evacuation drill occurring at one of our elementary schools. Practice events such as this are commonplace throughout our schools.

This week is National Fire Prevention Week and you will see many of our schools hold fire drills and invite local fire departments to talk about fire prevention with students. We can never be too prepared in responding to all the types of emergencies that face us today.

To that end, NPSD is finishing up a district-wide All Hazards Plan that addresses how we respond in these various emergency situations. In preparing the document we have involved staff and local and county officials who are experts in the area.

I thank the North Penn community for its support as we continue to secure our schools and support the needs of those whom we serve.

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent, NPSD

NPHS Celebrates National Merit Scholars

The North Penn School District is thrilled to announce that 25 North Penn High School students were recognized as commended scholars and 13 NPHS students were named semifinalists in the 62nd National Merit Scholarship Competition (NMSC).

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the United States are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. These students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Out of the 1.6 million students who took the PSAT qualifying exam in October 2015, 16,000 are named semi-finalists in the country. Selected semifinalists represent less than one percent of high school seniors in the country. These academically talented high school seniors will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for more than 7,500 available National Merit Scholarships worth more than $33 million. These students were selected based on the ability to show exceptional academic talent and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The National Merit Scholarship Award recipients, including the 13 semi-finalists announced earlier this month, will be honored at a breakfast on Tuesday, October 25 in the North Penn High School senior cafeteria.

NPHS Speaker Series to Begin in October,
Featuring Wendell Refior

The North Penn School District is proud to announce the first presentation in a Speakers Series Entitled "Celebrate the Arts," funded by a grant from the North Penn School District Educational Foundation on Monday, October 24 at North Penn High School.

Wendell Refior, an independent Emerson scholar who bears an uncanny resemblance to the father of transcendentalism, will deliver the words and thoughts of Ralph Waldo Emerson to NPHS students and community members. The community is invited to attend Refior's presentation, a free event.
Refior is an independent Emerson scholar who reenacts sermons and orations in period costume. He will deliver key passages of Emerson's classic essay "Self-Reliance" to 11th and 12th grade Advanced Placement students in two in-school assemblies and will present Emerson's "Address on Education" to the community later that evening. In Emersonian tradition, both student and community audiences are encouraged to question and react to the philosopher's ideas. The program is free and will begin at 7:30 p.m. in seminar room A33 at NPHS.
Refior's previous engagements include performances at senior centers, Northeastern University teacher workshops and Unitarian Universalist churches. He resides with his wife in Bedford, MA, a town neighboring Emerson's Concord.
This presentation is the first in a Speakers Series entitled "Celebrate the Arts," which is funded by a grant from the NPSD Educational Foundation. The goal of this series, proposed by Janet Kratz, NPHS English teacher, is to highlight the accomplishments of writers, past and present, for students and the community.  Future speakers will include the poet laureate of Philadelphia, Yolanda Wisher, NPHS Class of '94, and a CBS news anchor.

NPSD Celebrates National School Lunch Week

To recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves nationally every day, NPSD schools recognized National School Lunch Week from October 10-14, 2016.

NPSD planned its National School Lunch Week menu to offer students their favorite meals which emphasize healthy, wholesome foods that students love to eat!  In addition, NPSD encourages parents to participate in the NPSD School Nutrition Program to ensure that their students have access to whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and less fat and sodium every day.

"School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and less fat and sodium," said Pamela Gallagher, Coordinator of School Nutrition Services. "National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program, and the appealing choices we offer."

The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day.  The program has been serving the nation's children for over 60 years and requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards. This includes offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole-grain rich foods and limiting fat, calories and sodium.

The "School Lunch Snapshot" campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association. Parents and students can follow the fun via the hashtag #NSLW. For more information about schools meals, visit www.npenn.org or www.schoolnutrition.org/SchoolMeals.
