Interim Rector's Reflection
Dear Friends,
Included in this edition of Epiphanies Happen is an invitation to nominate yourself or others for service in leadership of our wonderful parish. Our Parish Profile talks about our desire for effective and shared leadership between Rector and other parish leaders that will begin with members of the vestry taking responsibility for oversight and stewardship of various aspects of our life and ministry.
From the Profile:
"We want someone who will share responsibility for most activities with parish members. This was borne out in the following responses to a question in the 2016 Parish Survey asking respondents how they expected the Rector to interact with lay members of the parish:
- Share responsibility for most activities with parish members (57%)
- Support those members leading most activities in the parish (24%)
- Lead most activities in the parish (19%)"
Rasheen Carbin, Scott Marquardt and Lisa Kimball are stepping down this year, having completed three years of service and having each been tireless in their leadership of our community. As we embark on what I am convinced will be a bright future for Epiphany this will be an exciting time to take on the mantle of leadership.
The qualifications for service are rather dry: "...open to any communicant in good standing, at least sixteen years of age and a financial contributor of record in the past year..." What is really required is a deep and mature faith or trust in God for life. We can always develop our leadership skills, but the fundamental requirement is character formed through practice of the faith, marked by regular worship, the heart and soul of a servant and an open and generous spirit. That might be you or someone you know.
I invite you to say your prayers and as the names of people who you would like to see take on a season of this service come to mind, please let me or any member of the nominating committee know. The committee will invite four people to a three-year term and one to complete a two-year term opened by a resignation in the past year.

 Mission & Ministry 
November 6- All Saints' Sunday
104th Archbishop of Canterbury,
The Rt. Rev'd Dr. Rowan Williams:
The Rt. Rev'd Lord Williams of Oystermouth, will preach on All Saints' Sunday at both 8:00am and 11:00am during our service of Holy Eucharist. All are invited and welcome, regardless of faith background. Dr. Williams served as the Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the world Anglican Communion from 2003 to 2013. As Archbishop he left a legacy of fighting for unity within the Anglican Communion and participating in efforts of ecumenism within the wider Christian world. He is renowned internationally as a preacher, scholar, writer, and teacher of theology. He currently serves as The Master at Magdalene College in the University of Cambridge.
Announcement of Annual Meeting
The Annual Parish Meeting will be held at 9:30am in the Church on the First Sunday in Advent, November 27, 2016. At the meeting we will elect new members of the vestry, hear about the state of our finances and receive an update from the Calling Committee. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us.
Vestry Nominations
The Nominating Committee of the Vestry invites nominations of parishioners to serve a three-year term on the vestry. Any communicant in good standing, at least sixteen years of age and a financial contributor of record in the past year is eligible to serve. We will be seeking five new members this year. This class will be of enormous importance to welcoming and serving with our new rector. In addition to a monthly meeting, members will generally serve to oversee some area or program of our common life, including Buildings and Grounds, Budget and Finance, Welcome Table, Adult Formation, Children's Formation, Parish Life, Street Church, Worship-Related Guilds, and Stewardship and Fund Raising. In addition, vestry members will be expected to participate as money counters on a rotating basis. This will be an exciting season to be called into leadership of this wonderful parish. The Nominating Committee this year is Chaired by the Senior Warden, Rasheen Carbin who is joined by the Junior Warden, Bea Dermer, retiring members of the vestry, Scott Marquardt and Lisa Kimball as well as the Interim Rector, Geoffrey Hoare.
Stewardship Party, October 24, 2016 at 6:00pm
The time has come for us to ask each other to make financial commitments in support of God's work through the ministries of this parish in the year to come. There will be pizza, salad, beer, wine, soft drinks and water for everyone who RSVPs and agrees to serve in making this year's annual appeal a testimony to our trust in God's grace and a sign of our fidelity to one another and to those offering themselves to be our next leader. Coffee and Conversation continues this week with 'Voting as Freedom and Responsibility'.
Come and share your stories and experiences of voting, or the frustrations of not being allowed or able to vote. Or how did it feel if the candidate you voted for lost? What is it like to vote in DC? How do these questions inform your understanding of your Christian vocation? Tyler and Lisa will be leading this conversation and we look forward to a rich and lively discussion. Join us at 9:15am

Our posting for a new Rector remains open through October 21, 2016! We have received 12 applications as of October 11, which is a solid start. We are preparing to review them systematically. In the meantime, there is still time to nominate potential candidates and to help us spread the word that the search is still open. Do you have ideas of persons who might be a good match? Empower the Homeless Walk Thank You 
On behalf of Susan Weinbeck and Lois Nembhard, my fellow Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington partner parish representatives, I'd like to thank everyone that made last week's Empower the Homeless Walk a great success. Not only was the turnout exemplary, we also raised several thousand dollars. Since its founding 30 years ago, Epiphany has been a strong partner in promoting Samaritan's mission. Thank you for helping us live out our covenant with this important voice in the fight to end homelessness. I hope you'll join us next for year's walk.

Upcoming Guest Performances
YSOP Benefit Concert: October 14, 7:30pm
The Youth Service Opportunities Project is holding a benefit at the Church of the Epiphany on October 14th at 7:30 p.m. to raise money for its programming engaging young people in volunteer service to the homeless and hungry. Acclaimed tenor Nicholas Phan and pianist Myra Huang will be performing a program entitled, "Gods and Monsters", with works by German Romantic composers about myths, legends, and fairy tales. October 16, 2016 at 3:00pm. The Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic performs the Brahms Double Concerto for violin and cello. More information available on their website.

Welcome Table Breakfast:
A Rewarding Volunteer Experience!
The Welcome Table Breakfast is served every Sunday mornings to our brothers and sisters who are homeless. Volunteer Opportunities Include: Signing up worshipers for breakfast; Cooking and serving the meal; Setting tables, pouring coffee, and clean up.
The Welcome Table is looking for volunteers to help with:
Sign up: 6:30-8:30am (any Sunday)
Cooking and serving: 6:00-9:45am (1st Sunday)
Dining Room: 7:15-10:30am (3rd & 5th Sunday)
Additional help is welcomed anytime!

If you or someone you know is in need of prayer or conversation, please contact the church office. We would rather hear from many than miss the opportunity to connect with someone.
Wednesday Silent Prayer
