Why Employee Engagement Matters
By: Rosalie Catalano
Just because an employee seems to be satisfied at work does not mean they are fully engaged at work. One may be motivated by money - putting food on the table, paying rent or mortgage, and the like - and, therefore, satisfied with their job. They put in just enough time and effort to get the job done in a satisfactory manner; they are dependable, reliable, and an overall good employee.
Engagement, as in the prelude to marriage, is about commitment and passion. An engaged employee has an emotional stake in their employer's organization. They go above and beyond with a sense of energy and connection. They give their all - heart, spirit and mind - to the success of the organization.

At the corner of Fifth and Ludlow streets,
Juanita Darden-Jones is serving more than coffee these days.
Darden-Jones, owner of Third Perk Coffeehouse & Wine Bar, launched her "Perk-E-Lator" project Tuesday night, a shark tank-like pitch party that featured her and other small business leaders in downtown Dayton hearing ideas from area entrepreneurs and helping them with access to funding and coaching. It's going to be a monthly project to bring entrepreneurs and small business owners together.
"It was a wonderful experience, we had the opportunity to learn about new pop-up shops, it was a really cool space," she said. "It was good feedback, very lifting. I look forward to what's coming."
