News from Ms. Linda Dahnke,
Head of School

It Is Well With My Soul

It seems that most of you know the song, "It Is Well With My Soul."  It is a song that is most often associated with funerals and other such occasions.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, with my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

I am not sure if you know the story behind the song but it tells us a remarkable story about faith and trust in God.  The family of a Chicago lawyer, Horatio Spafford, boarded a large vessel traveling from the U.S. to England.  During the cruise, the ship collided with another ship and his four daughters drowned.  His wife's life was spared and as Horatio was sailing to reunite with his wife, he was notified that the ship was sailing over the exact spot where the girls were thought to have drowned.  The words of this song represent what he wrote during this dark time in his life and his desire to praise God even in the storm.

I always think of this song when there are things happening in the world today like hurricanes, cancer, and other life-threatening events.  Last week, my question was "Why?" to a friend dying at a young age of 37.  This week, I wonder why God would allow a hurricane to decimate a small island such as Haiti.  Have they not had enough destruction and/or natural disasters?  Yet, I also saw a picture in a Haitian village of one of the orphanages before the storm.  The workers and the children were holding hands in a circle and singing Praises to God.  For some of them, that could have been the last thing they actually did before God called them home.

Many of you are struggling with various things such as unemployment, death of a loved one, broken down cars, broken down children, and long-term illnesses.  You probably have questioned "why?" a few times, yourself.  When the answers do not seem to come, this song reminds us that God is listening and He will always be faithful in answering our prayers even if it seems He is not.  I think that God is okay when we question Him but I think that His ultimate purpose in each and every situation is for us to trust Him and to believe that He has a plan and that He is working everything out for our own good, in every situation.  The churning waters and the rushing winds of Hurricane Matthew provide a great visual for our lives; things are always churning and we are always rushing to get things done and on to the next thing.  However, just as the winds and the waves will slow down in that Hurricane, God will slow us down to see Him in the wind and the waves of our lives so that we, too, can say, with full confidence and assurance, "It is well with my soul."
Fun on the Zoo Field Trip Today
A great time was had by all on our field trip to the Chattanooga Zoo. The weather was perfect! Check out more photos on our BCA Facebook page.

Fall Break
BCA will be closed October 10 - 14 for Fall Break. CCC and BCA Day Care will be open. For students in K - 8th who need child care that week, there is a $15 per day, per child, non-refundable, pre-paid fee for BCA students. K - 8th grade students will need to bring a lunch and drink each day. Please see Melissa Swafford if you have any questions.

Washington, D.C. Trip (7th/8th grades)
There will be a mandatory meeting for parents of 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in going on the Washington, D.C. trip in mid-May. The meeting will be held in Mr. Streufert's room on Thursday, October 20 at 6 p.m. You will hear details of the cost and be able to share some ideas of how we can help students collect that. Any questions, please call Mr. Streufert.

Tardies
Tardies were just a bit better this week but something we all still need to work on. Thank you for taking note of this and working to get your student here ON TIME! For our students, this is their job and I am fairly certain that if any of us came late to our job, day after day, we would not have a job much longer.

As a reminder, your student must be here by 8:15 a.m. when ALL Pre-K3 through 8th grade classes begin. It is important for the teacher, the other students and especially your student. Thank you!

CCC (Infant - PK4) Area Drop-off
If you are bringing your child or student in the morning, please note that the lane closest to the building should remain open at all times for those parents who are able to just drop their students off and leave. There have been a few problems with that this week. 3 lanes should be sufficient to stop and bring in your child without causing too many issues.

SCRIP
Some of you have already taken advantage of this great opportunity to accumulate monetary rebates towards your student's tuition by buying gift cards for venues that you already visit. Check out the SCRIP link on bcalions.org to access sign-up forms, parent order forms, non-parent order forms and all things SCRIP so that you can participate in this program that will give you rebates on most purchases you already make. You must sign up before you can participate and that can be done online as well as with the forms you will be sent. BCA has a code - 464DEE2B5264L - that you may have to use, but most information is ready to go on the website. We also have the forms available in the lobby right next to the office.

The SCRIP store will be open on TUESDAYS before school (7:30 - 8:15 a.m.) and after school (3 p.m. - 4 p.m.) in the main lobby for parents who want to purchase cards at that time. Right now, we have on hand to sell cards for Home Depot, Lowe's, Chili's, Walmart/Sam's Club, Speedway, Visa, Belk, JCPenney, Little Caesar's, Starbucks, Target and Amazon, but many more are available online. ( shopwithscrip.com).
