Emergency Needs: Those Affected by the Hurricane

A Special Offering This Sunday
|
The category 4 Hurricane Matthew, which is currently heading toward the southeastern U.S. coast, has swept through southwestern Haiti and eastern Cuba and has been blamed for hundreds of deaths. Les Cayes, Haiti, where our Senior High Youth stayed during their July 12-18, 2014 mission trip and where they could still see the effects of the 2010 earthquake, was in direct line of this recent storm.
This Sunday we will receive a special offering to support the efforts of the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) to minister to those affected by Hurricane Matthew. PDA will immediately begin working alongside established partners in Haiti and Cuba to respond to this latest crisis and to support these areas during long-term recovery.

The 2017 Annual Appeal for Fourth Church and Chicago Lights is underway!
This year's theme, Light Your Light Shine!, invites us--as Shannon Kershner notes in her letter to the congregation--to reflect on how we embody Christ's love in everything we do, including how our giving supports this light in the city.
The legacy left--in the form of invested funds--by those who have come before us sustains the building and operations of Fourth Church. But it is our giving that funds the actual ongoing mission and ministry, that enables us to continue living out the call to let our light shine in the city.
Information about the 2017 Annual Appeal for Fourth Presbyterian Church and Chicago Lights is available online--www.fourthchurch.org/giving/appeal--which includes an option for online pledging. You can also read more there about the impact your pledge has.
Pledge cards are available in the pew racks as well, and for those who prefer to use the mailed card, that is on its way to you!
Please make your pledge and help us reach our goals of $3 million for Fourth Church and $500,000 for Chicago Lights--and join us as we let our light shine!

Register for This Musical Trip by October 15

There is just one more week to sign up for next summer's music mission trip to Northern Ireland!
John Sherer and Vicky Curtiss invite you to join them on this journey that will provide a unique opportunity to offer the gift of music and learn about the impact of Northern Ireland's religious, political, and ethnic conflict as a way to understand conflict in other settings.
Participants will give concerts in various churches and cities. They will also explore communities in Northern Ireland to learn from mission partners about peacemaking and reconciliation there as well as how to build peace and promote justice in our own communities.
Applications for this July 10-19, 2017, trip--which are due by next Saturday--can be completed online.

"Morality, Christian Ethics, and Political Discourse"

Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune will be joined by Princeton emeritus professor Robin Lovin and Fourth Church members Mary Schaafsma and Niala Boodhoo on Monday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary for a conversation about the current path of morality in our country.
Join us for this discussion about the church's place in a conversation of morality, ethics, and politics and where, as a church, we can truly begin to seek making a difference in this world.
Our October 6-13 book study on The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion parallels the conversations that will be had in this forum. If you haven't yet purchased a copy, you can do so at Coffee Hour on Sunday morning.

Katherine Willis Pershey: October 14

Next Friday Katherine Willis Pershey, Associate Minister of First Congregational Church in Western Springs, will be with us to discuss her new book, Very Married: Field Notes on Love and Fidelity.
In her book Pershey, a graduate of Claremont School of Theology, speaks frankly, with equal parts humor and intelligence, about the challenges and consolations of marriage. As she shares her own tales of bliss and blunder, temptation and deliverance, Pershey invites her readers to commit once again to the joyful and difficult work of cherishing another person.

Current Volunteer Needs
Cooks for Sunday Night Supper on October 30, 2:00-6:15 p.m.
In2It Café instructors to teach thirty-minute enrichment classes--from yoga to chess to dance to creative writing--to Chicago Lights Tutoring students on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, the first week of October through mid-December, from 5:25 to 5:55 p.m.
