Calder: Monumental features these iconic works of bolted steel plate-which rise in sweeping curves, or puncture space with geometric lines-revealing the artist's exploration of forms, volumes, and voids. Using shapes that resonate with the natural world, Calder's large lively abstractions interact with the surrounding landscape.
Learn more about the sculptures with a docent guide during a one-hour tour of the exhibition.

War never seems to go out of business; while we fret over the threat of increased conflicts in North Korea and Afghanistan, images of earlier conflicts stick with us, whether presented in such great paintings as Goya's "The Third of May" and Picasso's "Guernica" or in the powerful photography of Robert Capa, Margaret Bourke-White, Sebastião Salgado and countless others. Two timely new exhibits - a large group show, Art and Conflict, with views of war by Colorado artists, and a vintage propaganda/poster show, The Great War: Visions of a World Conflict.

Sept 26
There was a time when employment law was exclusively the concern of the company attorney. Sure, there were certain things managers were told not to do - like ask questions about an applicant's family responsibilities during an interview or have staff handle personal errands on company time - but beyond these and a few other "no-nos," employment law was pretty much considered common sense. One quick look at recent, costly court cases and you'll realize those days are gone for good.
Today, employment laws are far-reaching, and managers - along with the organizations they work for - can't afford the luxury of ignorance. You must be up to date on the law, as well as all its fuzzy interpretations, and know precisely how those laws apply to situations within your organization. Otherwise, you risk employee complaints, lawsuits, and hefty fines. Additionally, federal laws and the courts´ interpretation of those laws has changed in recent months. For the uninformed, it's a recipe for disaster.

Sept 28
Nearly all work involves interaction with others and communication of some sort. Clear, persuasive communication - between individuals, within teams, among departments -- is a vital part of any successful organization.
Developed specifically to meet the needs of today's working woman, this communication training offers valuable insights you can use to enhance your communication style while earning the respect and cooperation of others. You'll learn to speak up with composure and confidence. We'll help you unearth self-defeating attitudes and replace them with positive expectations. You'll get tips to help you deal with trembling hands, "butterflies," and other nervous symptoms.

Oct 4
Payroll processing sounds like a simple proposition. Employees work at a certain rate of pay. You take out taxes and give them the rest of what they've earned. Unfortunately, regulations regarding special benefits and other payments turn a simple task into a legal landmine. With this payroll management training, you'll gain strategies to handle payroll accurately, legally and with complete confidence.

Thru Sept 29 | 10:15 pm | The Bovine Metropolis Theater
This just in...some news should be fake. Luckily, savvy experts at Denver's own Bovine Metropolis Theater are stepping in to corner the market with their new, fully improvised show, "Fake Network News."
Performed in the style of Meet the Press, AC 360 and other cable news programs, FNN features interviews, recurring segments and round-table discussions between their fake news anchors and a 'virtual who's who' of counterfeit experts, pundits and commentators.
"The fakest of the fake. (@BovineMetro) Sad. So-called journalists make up all the facts. PATHETIC. Only I can do that. LOSERS."
~President Trump (note: this is a fake tweet, or IS it?)
While the Pundits might be fake, the issues are utterly real and provided by the audience. Gun control? Sure. Immigration? Why not. The ethics of pet squirrel fashion shows? Um, ok. The anchors, reporters and commentators at FNN are chomping at the bit to give you all the fake news you deserve. The FNN production staff is going rogue, unscripted and improvised. It's all fabricated on the spot, and in front of your lying eyes.

Thru Sept 29 | 8:00 pm | The Bovine Metropolis Theater
Now in its 17th year playing in Denver, "On The Spot" is the fastest and funniest hour on earth! You will laugh so hard that time and space bend!
In the style of "Whose Line Is It Anyway," four actors and a moderator use audience suggestions to make for an action-packed night of craziness. "On The Spot" remains a local favorite, using the audience's unique suggestions to improvise scenes, games, and songs to make newcomers or regulars laugh themselves silly!
See as many as 20 improv games performed in one show."On The Spot" is perfect for company parties, birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and any event where people want to laugh.

Thru Sept 30 | 8:00 pm | The Bovine Metropolis Theater

Send out your owls! Hogwarts has been rebuilt and the future generations of magical children are all excited for a year at Hogwarts.
He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been destroyed, there surely is no evil left to threaten the Heirs of Hogwarts... or is there?
Experience a loving homage to the world of Harry Potter. With completely improvised story lines, this is a heartfelt send-up to the universe created by J.K. Rowling and is the only Harry Potter themed improv show in Denver. Imagine a love letter in the form of spoof, and that's what witches, wizards and muggles will be enjoying Friday Nights at 8:00 p.m. at the Bovine Metropolis Theater.
And just like a Bag of Bertie Bott's every flavored beans, "Anything can happen," says Gryffindor and Dramaturg, Kent Welborn. "In improv anything can happen, and then in the magical world of Harry Potter anything can happen double."
All the things you love about the Harry Potter universe will be displayed on stage: charms, Hogwarts houses, transfiguration, and magical creatures. Returning to Hogwarts has never been this funny. "Heirs of Hogwarts: An Improvised Adventure" is a loving fan-fiction parody of an entire year at Hogwarts.

Makeshift Shakespeare pays homage to the Bard himself!  The absurdity of Shakespeare's comedies, the misfortune of his tragedies, and the yesteryears of his histories are all performed in a nightly original production by these brainy improvisers.
Denver has never seen anything quite like it!  "All-male, all-Shakespeare, all the time," says director Shannon Wood Rothenberg.  Theater-goers will find their intellects heartily entertained and their wit vigorously stimulated by the unlimited possibilities of improvisation coupled with the richness of William Shakespeare's legacy.

Ed Battle delivers great melodies and lyrics with respect, and all of the swing and emotion the support of dedicated jazz musicians can bring to a moment.
Ed Battle was born in New Jersey into a family of singers. He was encouraged to sing in church and in the jazz rich Philadelphia community by many of the jazz musicians of his time.
In the sixties he discovered theatre -- training and touring in Jim Mapp's ''Playward Bus Company." He moved to Denver in the seventies, and worked for many years with The Horace Henderson Combo. Ed was the featured vocalist at the world famous El Chapultepec for 12 years; appeared in many plays and musicals; and toured with area theatres such as Bonfils Theatre, Cleo Parker Robinson, The Eulipions Ensemble and Shadow Theatre. He received many awards and recognition for his contribution and commitment to the cultural community of Colorado. Ed has also appeared in films -- Almost Blue and The Forgotten One, to name a few.

Quirktett is a collaboration of four local singers - MaryLynn Gillaspie, Terri Jo Jenkins, John Bertram, and Janine Gastineau, who all dig the vocal jazz concept of such groups as Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Rare Silk, Lake Street Dive, to mention a few. Their live shows incorporate a living, breathing, and swinging vocal quartet with an exceptional rhythm section of some of the metro area's top Jazz musicians. Building on the 'horns with words' approach, Quirktett's vocal arrangements are like a horn section complete with both ensemble passages and vocalized solos. In addition to their four-part selections, they perform tunes featuring individual combinations, offering a wide palette of textures and styles.

HitchCocktails is an improvised thriller and drinking game parodying the films of Alfred Hitchcock. Play along as the actors dodge conspiracies and bullets, find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, and fall in love with double agents. Of course, as it is high class murder, the actors will also have access to a bar on stage and will drink whenever offered by a castmate - so the plotlines will become more convoluted one way or another. The action's so tense, you'll have to get tight.

My earliest memory of hearing Glen Campbell was when my hip young uncle brought over a greatest hits record and put it on the turntable. I remember hearing "By the Time I Get To Phoenix." If filled me with an unfamiliar sadness: the loneliness of a long country road, the emptiness of a house when a lover has gone, fixing morning toast alone. All very odd feelings in a kid raised on bubble gum pop and church hymns.
But that was the genius of Campbell. To many people he was a just a country star, but to us he was an unparalleled musician, with huge vocal prowess and equally impressive guitar chops, who could evoke emotions out of a tree stump. In tribute to him we have selected some of our favorite songs, including "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Galveston," as well as many others, to pay homage to one of our favorite artists.

Arkitecture is a new, genre bending project from producer/musician Dave Miller. Drawing on the influence from history's greats, Arkitecture is building music to last through the ages.
The debut album, "Organic Temples," is built on the roots of hip-hop and rock, with a foundation of funky rhythms, psychedelic sounds, stellar musicianship and jazz ideals. The live sound is driven by analog synthesizers, fat drums and bass, and melodic rhymes. There is a distinct style, yet enough variety on this album for the project to take on many shapes in the future.
Arkitecture is a versatile vehicle for creative expression. To keep balance in his musical approach, Dave is constantly in the studio experimenting with different vibes and musical hybridism. Beginning with a background in drums, bass and world percussion, and adding in a healthy obsession with acoustic and electronic instruments, the possibilities are seemingly endless for this producer. With a focus on rich, pure tones, fresh beats and deep textures, this golden vision is just the start of the journey.

To get what he wants, Macbeth will let nothing stand in his way - not the lives of others, the people of Scotland or his own well-being. As his obsession takes command of his humanity and his sanity, the death toll rises and his suspicions mount. Shakespeare's compact, brutal tragedy kicks off the grand reopening of our theatre-in-the-round in a visceral re-imagining from director Robert O'Hara. This ambitious reinvention of the classic tale reminds us that no matter what fate is foretold, the man that chooses the dagger must suffer the consequences.

The Yellow Ticket Featuring: Alicia Svigals, Klemer Violin, Marilyn Lerner, Piano
Sept 15 | 7:30 pm | American Mountaineering Center
The Yellow Ticket is a multimedia event featuring a rare 1918 silent film and an original film score performed live by klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals (founder of the Grammy-winning group, The Klezmatics) and jazz pianist Marilyn Lerner (Toronto's virtuoso new-music pianist). The film stars an adolescent Pola Negri, who would later become the legendary femme fatale of the silent era, and tells the story of a young Jewish woman from a Polish shtetl who is constrained by anti-Semitic restrictions to lead a double life in a brothel while attempting to study medicine in Tsarist Russia. The film also includes precious footage of the former Jewish quarter of Warsaw and the people who once lived there. Joined by Yonatan Malin (faculty member in the College of Music and Program in Jewish Studies at CU Boulder), David Shneer (Chair of Religious Studies at CU), and Harumi Rhodes (Assistant Professor of Violin), this production will bring together cultural awareness in music, film and discussion.

A dash of spit and grit has gotten Denver's tenacious Bug Theatre through more than twenty years at its home at 3654 Navajo Street, which started out in 1912 as a neighborhood nickelodeon. For the past two decades, offbeat performing-arts showcases like Freak Train, the Emerging Filmmakers Project, Equinox Theatre Company and the Grawlix have filled the Bug's calendar with a steady feed of variety, theater and comedy shows. But all that activity creates wear and tear, and the venue can always use a few more structural and interior improvements, like the new surround-sound system and film screen. The Bug's Best will raise funds while providing plenty of fun on Saturday, September 16, with performances by returning Grawlix superstars Adam Cayton-Holland and Andrew Orvedahl, among others; Freak Train's GerRee Hinshaw will serve as master of ceremonies.

Book by Alfred Uhry, Music by Robert Waldman, Lyrics by Alfred Uhry. Based on the novella by Eudora Welty Set in eighteenth century Mississippi, the musical follows Jamie Lockhart, a rascally robber of the woods, as he courts Rosamund, the only daughter of the richest planter in the country. The proceedings go awry, however, thanks to a case of double-mistaken identity. Throw in an evil stepmother, intent on Rosamund's demise, her pea-brained henchman, and a hostile talking headin-a-trunk, and you get a rollicking country romp. With its distinct LIVE bluegrass sound, colorful cast, and unique form of storytelling, The Robber Bridegroom is a hidden gem!

Sept 16 | 6:30 pm | Boedecker Theater
Sept 16 | 6:00 pm | Boedecker Theater
NR | 1 hr 25 min | Drama / Comedy
Boedecker Theater's Friday Night Weird film screenings return this month with a Very Cera September, a series dedicated to that wispy icon of millennial awkwardness, actor Michael Cera. Over the course of five films, cineastes can sample every era of Cera, from his star-making comedic turns to some of the most decidedly outré titles in his filmography. The month long affair continues at 8:45 p.m. on Friday, September 15 with the Boedecker premiere of the absurd 2017 indie comedy Lemon, where Cera plays against type in a supporting role as an arrogantly twee student in leading man Brett Gelman's Chekhov class.
