Parent Workshop to Protect Children in a Digital Age

Times have changed and the digital world is ever evolving and to that end two Roxbury School's Substance Awareness Coordinators (SAC), Jennifer Kenny from Roxbury High School and Geri Esposito from Eisenhower Middle School, brought in Melissa Straub from High Impact Youth Training Solutions to help educate parents on how they can protect their children in a digital world at a free parent workshop on Wednesday night at Roxbury High School.

"My hopes for bringing this presentation to Roxbury was for parents to be made aware of the dangers and how to protect their children from the dangers of social media," according to Esposito.

Straub uses her experiences as a private investigator and social justice advocate to present a workshop with extensive information on current issues, sites, apps and how children are using social media and technology every day with tips to help parents monitor their children's online activity.

Roxbury Rotary's Annual Fruit & Pie Sale
Roxbury Rotary Club's annual fundraiser is here! Money raised in the Annual Roxbury Rotary Fruit and Pie Sale go to some really good causes.

It's the organization's biggest fundraiser and it's very popular, not only with those who buy the pies and citrus fruit but also with Roxbury Social Services Department Director Janet Wald. Rotary donates some of the fundraiser's proceeds to Social Services and, each year, it orders extra fruit and pies that people can buy and give directly to the Roxbury Food Pantry, Alford said.

This year's Fruit and Pie Sale has a couple of new twists, said Alford. The fruit will come from California, not Florida, and there will be middle school and high school students selling fruit to help raise money for  Raising the Roof for Levi, an effort to help the Spencer family of Succasunna make their house more accessible for their 4-year-old son Levi, born with spina bifida.

Alford's very excited about the involvement of Eisenhower Middle School students in this year's sale, something instigated by Eisenhower 8th-grader T.J. Mathis. With support from Eisenhower Middle School Principal Dominick Miller and teachers Marie Pessolano and Elizabeth Tucker, the school's Builder's Club (a middle school counterpart to the Kiwanis Club's high school arm called the Key Club) will work with Roxbury High School Interact Club members.

Pies and fruit can be pre-ordered online. For more information call Roxbury Rotary President Gary Ribe at 973-219-4367.

Hip Hop Dance After School

Hip Hop is an eclectic street style of dance that is performed in running shoes to current upbeat tempos. The dynamic moves taught in Hip Hop class are fast, stylish, funky and similar to those seen in music videos.

This class is appropriate for high energy dancers that are driven by a beat. Similar to a Jazz class, Hip Hop is broken down into 3 parts - warm up, corner work/technique and choreography. Students in a Hip Hop class will work on their strength, flexibility, and musicality through intricate fun and fast paced funky choreography.

Since the tempos are usually quicker than any other dance form, the choreography in a Hip Hop class provides a great cardio workout and is also a fun way to exercise the mind and memory.

(Children should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers to class)

Date:   Throughout the 2016/2017 School Year
Time: After-School at the Designated School
