We kicked off the week at the Upton Community Empowerment and Wellness Center in Baltimore City with Maryland DHCD Secretary Kenneth Holt announcing Community Legacy awards for Baltimore City (and one for the Community Empowerment and Wellness Center!). Maryland Department of Planning Secretary Wendi Peters joined us to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Maryland Heritage Areas. These 13 areas are critical to preserving the state's heritage and bringing tourism dollars to their areas. We celebrated at the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area in Prince George's County. Delegates Mary Beth Carozza (right) and Charles Otto joined us to showcase the facade improvements in the Berlin Main Street (near Ocean City). The Town of Berlin is running out of space for businesses on the Main Street (a good problem to have!). Check out the media coverage here.

The Housing for All Baltimore Coalition held a rally in Baltimore City to support Question J at the Lillian Jones Apartments in Greenmount West. CDN, United Workers and many other organizations came together to collect over 18,500 signatures this summer to put an Affordable Housing Trust Fund on the ballot in Baltimore City. It is now called Question J! Great turn out for the rally!

CDN featured a homebuyer workshop provided by the Southern Maryland Tri-County Community Action Committee. Homebuyers who have taken advantage of the services came to visit to tell us their success story. Then we toured one of the developments to also highlight Community Action in Southern Maryland. We stopped in Hagerstown for the open house of the new BuroBox, Hagerstown's new entrepreneur center. Mayor Gysberts (left) and Delegate Brett Wilson came along to the opening and the tour of the Main Street which overlaps the Arts and Entertainment District. Click here for media coverage.

The old Cecil County jail was converted into beautiful affordable senior residences in Elkton. It is an amazing example of the use of Rental Housing Works funding and collaboration of multiple partners to get projects done. One resident (right) gave glowing testimony of the quality of the facility and the excellent management. Home Partnership was the nonprofit partner in this deal. Media coverage is found here.

Arundel Community Development Services (ACDS) hosted a tour of their revitalization efforts in Brooklyn Park, including several homes recently rehabbed. Then the panel discussion included details on the Brooklyn Park-Curtis Bay (called Bay Brook area) Vision and Action Planning process, and how banks can participate in revitalization. Thanks to ADCS, Anne Arundel Department of Aging for the vans, Strong City Baltimore, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and FDIC for their work on this day.

We ended the week with our Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon at the Chesapeake Arts Center featuring Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates Michael Busch. Thanks also to Delegates Steve Lafferty, Ned Carey and Mary Washington for joining us!
