MORRIS PLAINS, N.J. -- A week after suing to prevent the merger of two of rivals, Honeywell International backed out of a merger of its own over potential snags with antitrust regulators.
The $90 billion proposed merger with United Technology, something considered for nearly two decades and proposed again by Honeywell in spring 2016, would have created a nearly $200 technology company.
Though United initially appeared amicable to the merger, Honeywell officially ended the courtship after months of waning interest by United.

 Why the 3M/Scott Deal Makes Sense |

3M announced that it has inked a deal with Johnson Controls to acquire its Scott Safety business for $2 billion. Scott Safety is a manufacturer of equipment such as self-contained breathing apparatus systems, respirators, thermal imaging cameras, escape equipment, communications gear, and other protective instruments. Scott Safety's products provide protective solutions in industries such as fire services, chemical, construction, petroleum, industrial, and emergency services. The deal, which will be accretive to 3M's business, is expected to close in the second half of the year. It also marks the second-largest acquisition in 3M's history, and will make the company the largest player in the personal protection market in the U.S.

Finnish company Marioff announced its HI-FOG water mist fire protection system meets FM Approvals standards for fire protection in data centers.
The standards were created by FM Approvals, a third-party testing and certification services outfit.
HI-FOG won FM Approvals' certification after full-scale fire tests, which include protection of data processing equipment halls and cable trays under raised floors.

LOS ANGELES -- A California business claims it was not paid for its work on a federal project.
United States of America, for the use and benefit of Glendale Plumbing & Fire Supply Inc., filed a complaint on Feb. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against Radix Fire Protection Inc., Cal-City Construction Inc. and Western Surety Co. alleging breach of contract.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that Glendale Plumbing & Fire Supply Inc. suffered monetary damages to its business from not being paid for its work on a federal project in Mather in July 2016. The plaintiff holds Radix Fire Protection Inc., Cal-City Construction Inc. and Western Surety Co. responsible because the defendants allegedly breached their contractual agreement with Glendale Plumbing & Fire Supply Inc. by failing to pay them plus interest.

The fire, emergency and security systems apprenticeship trailblazer has officially launched during a major industry event held at the UBM offices in London. The majority of candidates are now expected to formally start their apprenticeship in September this year.
The event was jointly organized by the apprenticeship employers group, alongside the Fire and Security Association (FSA), the Fire Industry Association (FIA) and the British Security Industry Association (BSIA).

EASTON -- It looked like it snowed in town one Saturday morning - but only in the parking lot of one gas station.
The fire suppression system dropped a dry powder chemical at Mobil, at 491 Foundry St., while the shop was open.
"There was an accidental release of the ANSUL dry chemical system," Fire Chief Kevin Partridge said. "The company came down that maintains it and believes, for some reason, there was an issue with one of the heat detectors that set it off."

David Paja, former president of Honeywell Security & Fire, has accepted a new executive position with Delphi Automotive.
Honeywell did not previously announce Paja's departure. Former ADI Global President Michael Flink is now serving in the same role, which his Linkedin page shows he assumed Jan. 17. Rob Aarnes, former president of ADI North America, is listed as president of ADI Global on his Linkedin page. And Andy Morra, former vice president of ADI North America, is listed as president of ADI North America on his Linkedin page.

W.W. Gay is a provider of comprehensive fire detection and fire suppression systems, as well as data/security and electrical services. The company primarily serves the healthcare, military/government, education/institution, commercial and industrial/utility end markets. W.W. IT and data rooms are usually access controlled, so a reliable fire suppression option is to install an automatic fire protection system that can be deployed instantly.
The scenario of an Information Technology (IT) and data room being taken offline due to fire damage may not be first on the list of potential facility hazards, but it very well deserves the same attention and respect as any other potential hazard. In the current business climate, there are very few professions that do not depend on technology in some capacity to drive business operations. As technology's role in business continues to evolve, the use of IT and data rooms to secure company data is growing and changing. The types of spaces hold highly privileged and critical company information, yet are very frequently unprotected and susceptible to loss due to several elements of fire risk. Without proper precautions to safeguard these rooms, organizations risk disastrous results such as business interruption, loss of vital information, and significant financial strain to replace and recover infrastructure.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFNS) -- Members of the F-35 Integrated Test Force developed a new funnel system that captures the foam or water deluge during required hangar fire-suppression system tests, saving $79,750 and several days of delay, which can be critically important for test programs.
The new funnel system testing by members from the Edwards Air Force Base Fire Department and the 461st Flight Test Squadron tried out a new funnel system to conduct fire suppression tests Jan. 7-8 at Hangar 1820.
In order to protect workers and multimillion dollar aircraft, such as the F-35A Lightning II, tests need to be conducted periodically to ensure hangar fire suppression systems are working properly and can be activated and deactivated.

United Technologies Corporation announced it will be investing big time in the Brooklyn tech world.
The Connecticut-based corporation will be opening a the United Technologies Digital Accelerator, in which it says it will invest $300 million and 250 jobs.
According to a release, the company will focus on "developing software solutions for UTC's world-class product and service portfolio." That portfolio includes military and commercial jet propulsion, aerospace and defense products, elevators, escalators and more. "United Technologies Digital is recruiting hi-tech professionals specializing in product management, software development, data science and more."

Fire protection engineers help protect people from fire and explosion hazards by ensuring that buildings have adequate exits, that flammable substances are controlled, and that everyone operating near such hazards takes necessary precautions. Nancy Pearce is a fire protection engineer for the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA).
Work overview.
Many fire engineers work behind the scenes to help design equipment or buildings to prevent or withstand fires. Others figure out what building materials are required and how to configure exits or hallways to allow quick escape in case of a fire. Some fire protection engineers conduct investigations after fires or do research on materials that may provide better fire resistance.
