A Note from the Office

We are now upgrading the office telephone equipment. For the next two weeks it may be a challenge to reach anyone or leave a message through the voice mail system.  Please keep trying or simply send us an email.  You can email any of the staff through a link on our webpage.

The office will send out pledge statements on September 18th. You can quickly and easily bring your pledge up to date or pay the remainder by paying online on our website. Save a stamp!
A Note from Peter

I am pleased to announce that the Rev. Dr. Henrietta Wiley will join St. Margaret's as the interim assistant rector through June of 2018. She will be working half-time on children's formation, primarily on Sunday mornings and Monday evenings. She will also be helping out with our Thursday morning Bible Study.

Henrietta (Rhetta) Wiley is Associate Professor of Sacred Scripture at Notre Dame of Maryland University.  She earned her PhD from Harvard University, attended seminary at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, and graduated college at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  She has served as a an assisting priest at the Cathedral of the Incarnation and as a supply priest in several parishes around theDiocese of Maryland.  Dr. Wiley has published work on the book of Judges, the religion of ancient Israel, and ancient Near Eastern mythology and ritual. To her own surprise is currently now working on a feminist theology of Wonder Woman.  Raised in New York City, Rhetta has lived for ten years in Baltimore with her wife Mary Sykes and their beautiful cat Tuxedo.  She is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the community of St. Margaret's this year.

Dr. Wiley's first Sunday with us will be this Sunday, September 17. Please join me in giving her a warm welcome next week.
A Word About Sunday Morning Forums

We will be holding our Sunday morning forums in the new Fellowship Hall this year. This will enable those who are making the presentation the chance to be heard because they are further away from the coffee and goodies socializing area.

Once you have grabbed your coffee, please make sure you attend by crossing the foyer in the formation building!

FOR THOSE IN CHARGE OF FORUM PRESENTATIONS:  Please note that you will be responsible for setting up chairs and putting them away. You can certainly ask your audience to assist you. If you will be using any audio visuals, please let the Rev. Peter know prior to that morning.
Long Term Planning Comm. Forum This Sunday

Please join us between the 9 and 11:15 services in the fellowship hall to hear an update and ask questions from the long range planning team focused on moving SMC forward!  You'll learn about campus-wide suggestions, initiatives for stronger lay leadership and a discussion on our financial well-being.
Thursday Morning Bible Study Begins This Week

Our Thursday morning bible study will resume on Sept. 14, from 9:15-10:30 a.m. in Formation Classroom E. Childcare is available in the church nursery. All are welcome! This year's study will center on Forward Movement's publication "The Path" - the story of the Bible, excerpted from the New Revised Standard Version so that it is clear and easy to read. Participants will follow the path of God's love all the way from the beginning to the end, from Adam's creation to John's revelation.

This year's Stewardship campaign has officially begun!  This year we will celebrate our 325th anniversary by continuing our tradition of giving. Letters and pledge cards were mailed last week, as well as included in the folders handed out at this past weekend's services.

Through your generosity from last year's campaign, we are able to continue reducing the Endowment draw to pay for operations, purchase a new campus phone system, expand the Monday night faith and formation program, enhance our Mission work and support the thriving Thursday morning bible study.

Even with our stewardship success, there was still a budget shortfall. This year, we are asking for a pledge commitment target of $890,000, which is a 3.5% increase over last year's pledge amount. While still less than the operating budget, we feel this amount will reduce our Endowment draw while still sufficiently supporting St. Margaret's.

We ask you to prayerfully consider your stewardship pledge for 2018 with the idea of continuing St. Margaret's legacy of 325 years of giving. Return the pledge card to the office, place in the offertory plate, or pledge online under the "stewardship pledge" link on www.st-margarets.org . For any questions, please feel free to contact our Stewardship co-chairs Doug Seybert (703-599-8746; doug_seybert@yahoo.com) and Brad Callahan (443-326-3333; brad@metacoastal.com). Thank you for your continued support of St. Margaret's Church!

NEXT Monday, Sept. 18th, Jim Hall will closely examine that key part of our weekly worship: the Nicene Creed.

The week after that, Sept. 25, Valery Weekley will introduce "lectio divina": a traditional practice of scriptural reading, meditation and prayer to promote communion with God.

Then five weeks of discussion on the history and legacy of the Reformation will follow, led by Ernie Tucker, Paul O'Donnell, and John Freymann--an expert on the history of Christianity who teaches at the Naval Academy.  The series will conclude on November 13th with a discussion by Mary Klein, archivist of the Diocese of Maryland, about the history of the Episcopal Church in our region.

foyers
Sign up for Foyers 2017-18

Foyers is a small group opportunity for the people of St Margaret's to get to know each other in an informal setting.  We form groups of 6, 7, or 8 and then meet outside of the church often sharing a meal.  The traditional format has been for people to gather in each other's homes for a meal; but we have seen many other ways of getting together such as going out for a meal, attending a local play together or attending a concert.  Additionally, we have 3 large gatherings throughout the year to connect with the larger group.   The committee will be meeting to make the groups in late August.  If you have been a past member, you don't have to do anything.  If you would like to join, let one of the committee members know.

Please mark your calendar for September 24, 3-5:00 pm, so you can join us for our Fall Kick-off. The groupings will be provided at that time. More information will be provide about this gathering.
