Weekly Reflection
Greetings! My name is Joshua Daniel, and I thought I would reintroduce myself after a summer away. I am in my last year studying for ministry at Virginia Theological Seminary and I am working at Epiphany through May as a part of that training.
My family and I are from Arkansas. Jenna, my wife, is a speech pathologist and also a small business owner selling essential oils. My son, Jude, just started second grade and our daughter, Ruby, is three. Before coming to seminary I worked as a chaplain, taught college classes, and helped edit an academic journal at the University of Arkansas, where I received a Ph.D in Philosophy in 2015.
I am excited to return to Epiphany and eager to get back to work! I learned so much last year and look forward to ministering alongside many of you in contexts familiar and new. I will be at Epiphany all day on Tuesday's for the next several weeks. If you live or work in the area I would love to meet for coffee or lunch, so please let me know!
This last summer I worked as an intern at St. Mary's parish in St. Mary's City, Maryland (way down south, where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake Bay). It was a really nice, affirming summer of ministry and it was my first chance yet to work full time in a church. I learned a lot and got to participate widely in the happenings of the church. I also led a couple of Christian education meetings. This was a several week "course" examining some of the fundamental aspects of faith and another on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "
Life Together
." Bonhoeffer wrote that book while working in an underground seminary in 1930s Germany. Bonhoeffer was a strong voice of resistance against Hitler (ultimately participating in a plot to assassinate him) but also an unrelenting critic of the church, which had largely acquiesced to the Nazi government. In "
Life Together:
Bonhoeffer writes about the difference between our ideals and the "Divine Reality" we are called to:
"Innumerable times a whole Christian community has broken down because it had sprung from a wish dream. ... But God's grace speedily shatters such dreams. Just as surely as God desires to lead us to a knowledge of genuine Christian fellowship, so surely must we be overwhelmed by a great disillusionment with others, with Christians in general, and, if we are fortunate, with ourselves. ... Only that fellowship which faces such disillusionment, with all its unhappy and ugly aspects, begins to be what it should be in God's sight ..."
Bonhoeffer's book has weighed on me as I have continued on my journey in the Episcopal Church. My hope this year is to help, in whatever way I can, build the community-the life-at Church of the Epiphany, knowing that may mean working through the difficult process of subjecting
my
"ideals" to the Divine Reality of God. But in this there is hope. Hope that I can come to see the world and the church not as I want it but as God does.

Following the service, the family and any who wish to join will proceed to Rock Creek Cemetery for the interment.

Worship at Epiphany
September 17, 2017
Come one, come all to Homecoming Sunday. It is time to reconnect with all of your friends and family at the Church of the Epiphany. We invite you to welcome our new Rector, greet your friends, catch up on all that has happened over the summer and look forward to a renewing Epiphany and rediscovering our mission and members.
We will worship together at 11:00am, the choir will be back and the music will be glorious. Then we will share in a potluck lunch while we visit with each other and learn more about Realm, our new online tool for keeping our parish records up to date. If we don't have your picture for our pictorial directory, there will be an opportunity to have it taken. If you haven't met Rector Glenna yet, this is your chance. Be sure to be there.

Floral Dedication

Empower the Homeless Walk
Sunday, September 24
All are invited to join us for this year's Walk to Empower the Homeless on Sunday, September 24. The walk will begin immediately following the 8:00am service. We will walk together from Epiphany to the White House and back. The walk usually takes about 30 minutes.
In conjunction with the Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington, this walk is an effort to raise funds to help end homelessness in our area.
If would like to support Samaritan Ministry and their work which directly impacts 1,000 homeless and downtown poor, please bring cash or a check for $25 payable to "Samaritan Ministry."

October 4, 7:00pm
Join the Youth Service Opportunities Project at their Fall Social October 4th at 7:00 p.m. right here at Church of the Epiphany. All ticket proceeds go directly towards programming engaging youth volunteers in service to the homeless and hungry in our community. Tickets available here. How might you become more involved in the mission and ministry of our parish? There is so much going on at Epiphany and we are so grateful for the contributions you all offer towards making this happen. There are a few areas where we could really use your help! Please have a look at the list below and think where you might feel you could benefit from and contribute to the life of our community.
The Welcome Table team are looking for more volunteers to help in the kitchen and dining room. Please contact Maria Hunter if you are interested in getting involved in this important aspect of our ministry at Epiphany (

Liturgical Leaders: We are always looking for people to help with the important ministries that make our Sunday worship possible. We welcome new additions to the ranks of greeters, ushers, readers, lay Eucharistic ministers, as well as the flower guild, and altar guild.
