JOHN UCZEKAJ, president and CEO of ASPEN AVIONICS, was named Aviation Entrepreneur of the Year by Living Legends of Aviation at its star-studded gala on Jan. 18. Uczekaj was selected for this prestigious award to acknowledge his leadership in guiding Aspen Avionics from a brand new startup operation through developing the company into an avionics industry leader, all the while securing ongoing investments to fund new products.

These courses are tailored for industry professionals involved in the management, supervision and operations of aviation organizations.
SPORTY'S complete instrument rating course is now available as a dedicated iPad/iPhone app. This FAA WINGS-accepted app includes 13 hours of real-world video and advanced graphics, such as 3-D animations to help explain difficult concepts. Included with the app is a dedicated written test preparation program. The app also includes a flight training syllabus, interactive manuevers guide and integrated practical test standards.

General Aviation: A State-by-State Economic Impact Survey
The Alliance for Aviation Across America launched a wide-scale economic impact survey to outline the benefit of general aviation on businesses, local economies and communities around the nation. AEA Wired will highlight a different state each issue:

U.S. General Aviation Caucus Update
General Aviation Caucuses were formed in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate in 2009, to inform members and staff about the importance of GA to the nation's economy and transportation system. To date, 146 members of the U.S. Congress have signed on to the General Aviation Caucus. Click below to see if your elected representative is a member. General Aviation: A Vital Part of Our Economy
"The truth is that small aircraft and local airports are an important part of our community infrastructure and are uniquely suited to help public safety and support local communities.
There are many other unseen benefits associated with these airports and aircraft for our local communities as well.
Many small business owners rely on general aviation to allow them to meet with potential customers in multiple locations within a single day, visit areas not readily served by commercial aviation, transport supplies and deliver goods. In fact, 85 percent of businesses that own and operate general aviation aircraft are small- to mid-sized businesses, and these small aircraft are particularly important in rural states like ours.
This activity supports many jobs, including those that fly these planes, repair and service these aircraft, and a very robust, U.S.-based general aviation industry that, all told, accounts for $150 billion in economic activity across the country each year, supporting 1.2 million jobs."

FAA and Industry Rotorcraft Forum Begins Today
The third Federal Aviation Administration and Industry Rotorcraft Forum is Jan. 23-24 at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas. This is a two-day forum to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the certification and installation of new avionics technologies in the rotorcraft market. The aim of the forum is to open the lines of communication between industry and the Rotorcraft Directorate. This event is a continuation and follow-up on the first and second FAA and Industry Rotorcraft Forums, which took place in February and August of 2012.

The Federal Communications Commission is seeking comment on the appropriate treatment of 121.5 MHz emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) under Part 87 of the FCC Regulations.
On Jan. 10, 2011, the FCC formally stayed its rule on the prohibition on the certification, manufacture, importation, sale or use of ELTs that transmit distress alerts on frequency 121.5 MHz.
In the Third Report and Order in this proceeding, the Commission amended Section 87.195 of its rules to prohibit the certification, manufacture, importation, sale or use of 121.5 MHz ELTs. It adopted this amendment because, among other reasons, the international Cospas-Sarsat satellite system, which relays distress alerts to search and rescue authorities, stopped monitoring frequency 121.5 MHz on Feb. 1, 2009. The AEA Educational Foundation has awarded more than $1 million to students seeking careers in the aircraft electronics and aviation maintenance industry. Numerous scholarships are available and each range from $1,000 to more than $35,000.
Awards include scholarships for AEA members and their dependants as well as four AEA member flight training awards valued up to $5,000 each.
