The 2018 Scholastic Awards Season is Here!

Submissions Open Wednesday September 13

Dear NYC Scholastic Awards Community,

I hope you enjoyed a safe and creative summer. Thank you for making 2017 an outstanding year for the NYC Scholastic Awards-because of your support, the NYC region received more than 10,000 submissions from talented teens across the five boroughs. New York City students earned 127 National Medals for their art and writing. Additionally, the art portfolio submitted by Jonathan Maldonado , a New York City high school senior, was awarded a Gold Medal! I look forward to an even more incredible 2018 Awards season.

The NYC Scholastic Awards will again be administrated by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in partnership with Parsons School of Design and Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. We are also working closely with The Metropolitan Museum of Art to coordinate the exhibition of Gold Key work. I will be in touch during the upcoming months with news about opportunities for students and educators offered by our partners.

Registration for the 2018 Scholastic Awards opens on September 13 .
Here's what you need to know:

Updated Guidelines
There are changes to the submission guidelines for 2018. I strongly recommend reading through the category descriptions and submission guidelines before uploading any work. Students are responsible for submitting their work to the proper category and ensuring it adheres to the guidelines.

Throughout history, artists and writers have played a vital role
in shaping a more just society by seeking to solve problems on
behalf of the public good. The Civic Expression Award, sponsored by the Maurice R. Robinson Fund, and in partnership with the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools recognizes students whose art and writing expresses a vision of the society they are working to build, one that exemplifies democratic values and that allows all voices and viewpoints to be heard and respected. Recipients will be artists or writers whose work highlights and demonstrates awareness of American civic rights and responsibilities. Six students whose work best promotes responsible civic life will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Submission Deadline
Please make special note of the submission deadline of Thursday, December 14, 2017 . Mark this date on your calendars! All submissions must be uploaded and all submission forms and payments must be postmarked by 11:59 pm. Submission forms must be signed by the student, a parent/guardian and an educator.

Students should submit work early to avoid the stress and complications of waiting until the last minute. A submission form drop-off box will be available in the lobby of 557 Broadway beginning December 1.

Visit the NYC Scholastic Awards blog at artandwriting.nyc for updates and reminders throughout the school year. We look forward to another exciting season of inspiring art and writing from New York City teens!

Sincerely,
NYC Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
