Our Mission:
Supporting lifelong faith formation in the home and congregation.

From the President's Desk

This month we continue our series introducing the Christian Education Network of the ELCA board to you. We are blessed with an amazing group of leaders who have an array of gifts, passions and experiences.

This month you will meet Dan Jacob, Region 6 Network Advocate. In Colossians we read

...whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus...
Colossians 3:17 NRSV

Dan has many talents and gifts he brings to the Network and to his ministry on campus and in the congregation. Please hold him in your prayers, grab a cup of your favorite beverage and get to know Dan.

Blessings,
Pastor Juli Lejman-Guy

6 Questions

and a Cup of Bug Juice with...

Dan Jacob

I'm a maker. I make things. I make sculptures, kids' books, board games, Bible lessons, toys, VBS curriculums, videos, skits, and much, much more. I also create opportunities for youth and parents to grow closer to Jesus, each other, and the world around them. Right now I do most of my creating around Dayton, Ohio, at Wittenberg University and Peace Lutheran Church of Beavercreek. But creating also takes me to camp and into schools. As an ELCA deacon I am blessed to make Word and Service central to my life and the lives of others.

1. Can you describe your call to ministry?

I am called by Jesus, or rather commanded by Jesus, to serve children and youth. I mean this literally; in Matthew 19, Mark 10, and Luke 18, Jesus shares the Kid Commandment. I have been commanded by Jesus to keep no child from him because children are the keepers of his kingdom. My calling is to advocate for children and youth as equal, or perhaps even the most important, members in the body of Christ. As such I am devoted to uplifting kids, teenagers, and young adults as church leaders. I am committed to finding and fashioning the best faith formation materials for these young people. Most importantly, I am inspired to serve alongside these current and future leaders of the church as they do God's work in the world.

2. What is the best part of your ministry now?

The best part of my ministry is the diversity of my whole ministry. The fact that I am able to engage in so many types of ministry is just amazing. I am blessed to work with people in many walks of life as we explore our faith through art, discussion, study, music, worship, and play. This allows me to utilize my different spiritual gifts and to stretch myself in new ways. Diversity is the best part of my ministry because it means I have spaces where my strengths are put to the best use and places where I am pushed to grow.

3. What is one fact about you that would surprise people?

From the length of my hair and my general goofiness you might think that I'm some kind of rock musician when in fact I'm a bit musically challenged. I am attempting to grow and have recently taken up the guitar, but I still get some surprised looks when I pick up that guitar and look the part but start strumming away like a beginner.

4. What are three things Christian Educators need to keep their eye on?

Pardon my cliché but we should be keeping our eyes on the horizon. By that I mean we should be forward-looking and aware of what's coming. The world is sitting on the edge of a vast technological revolution that promises to change many aspects of our lives including our very understanding of life or what it means to be human. Young people need to be spiritually prepared for these changes before they happen.  They will face a strange new world and it is literally our job to help them form a faith to navigate and lead that world.

5. What are some of your favorite resources?

Wow, do I love Pinterest. We just created our third original VBS and it would not have been possible without an open catalog of ideas for art and game and service projects like Pinterest. You can also share your ideas with others. Putting the Internet aside, the resource that I need to remind myself to appreciate more often is creation.  We have the most abundant and brilliant resources available in nature. And it's free! And it's right outside! Jesus did most of his ministry out in creation and often even drew others outside. We should not forget that.

6. How can we pray for you?

Please pray for my family. Like many families mine is experiencing some scary health issues. Pray for the doctors, nurses, and other care givers. Pray for comfort and healing and hope.

Our next Facebook Party will be September 19 at 8:00 p.m. CT.

Gary Pecuch, author of Faith Webbing, will be our guest.

See you there!

Oh Lord, maker of all things, you open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living creature. We praise you for crowning the fields with your blessings and enabling us once more to gather in the fruits of the earth. Teach us to use your gifts carefully, that our land may continue to yield its increase, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen. (ELW pg. 62)
