Culver City Middle School Celebrates WEB Program – Where Everyone Belongs
WEB stands for “Where Everyone Belongs” and is a program that welcomes the sixth-grade class on their orientation (Camp Panther) and the first day of school as well as continues to support them throughout their first year of middle school.

WEB Leaders are chosen through an interview process because the leader has been identified as a person on campus who is a positive role model, responsible, possesses leadership qualities, is kind and, most importantly, has a desire to give back to her/his school community. This year we had over 250+ applicants and we are fortunate enough to have 136 WEB leaders and 65 small WEB groups for 6th graders.

Throughout the school year, WEB hosts several events for 6th graders including a pirate treasure hunt, movie nights, dodgeball Turkey tournament, and lunch time games. Today, WEB hosted a dance for 6th graders to hang out with their WEB leaders and simultaneously a mixer for 6th-grade parents to get to know each other.

Here's what two WEB leaders had to say about the program:

"I decided to become a WEB Leader because when I was in 6th grade, I didn't feel like I had very much help. I had to figure out a lot of things about our school by myself. I want to be a better resource for all of 6th graders than what I had."
Vanessa Andrick

"Being a web leader is such an honor and a huge pride I take in but there are obviously reasons why I wanted to become part of the web team. First of all, as most of my family, friends, and teachers notice I love to take leadership and socialize those two things are some of my strengths and something I really thrive in as an individual; and web was the perfect thing to put my strong areas to good use and also provides a good challenge that will benefit me. I also wanted to act as/become a big sister figure towards the new incoming six graders to make them feel like they always have someone to go to whether or not it be me or any other of my web collages; to make sure these six graders have a six grade year to love and remember. One of the big reasons I wanted to be a web leader and most importantly what lead me to be one today is ...Web actually helped me and had such an impact on me after being helped out by a web leader I knew that I wanted to be a part of the web movement that could touch so many lives."

Congresswoman Karen Bass Honors District
for Its Environmental Leadership
Pictured are, from left, CCUSD Board member Kelly Kent, CCUSD Board member Anne Allaire, Congresswoman Karen Bass, CCUSD Sustainability Coordinator Shea Cunningham, CCUSD Board member Summer McBride and CCUSD Interim Superintendent Leslie Lockhart. Pictured below are Congresswoman Karen Bass, left, and CCUSD Board President Kathy Paspalis.
Congratulations to CCUSD and the District's Sustainability Committee for receiving a Certificate of Recognition from Congresswoman Karen Bass during her Conversation with the Community on Tuesday night at the Culver City Senior Center. Congresswoman Bass recognized the District as a national leader in the field of environmental sustainability after CCUSD was one of just nine districts in the nation to earn national honors and a Green Ribbon award for environmental achievements and leadership!

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Education Director Louisa Koch, Director of the Campaign for Environmental Literacy James L. Elder, and Director of the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council Anisa Heming joined Assistant Secretary of Education Holly Ham in honoring CCUSD at a ceremony last year in Washington, D.C.

CCUSD was nominated by the California Department of Education for its extensive efforts in not only teaching environmental sustainability but also walking the walk to make the district itself more sustainable.

The recognition rewarded schools and districts that demonstrate exemplary achievement in three “pillars.” Pillar I: reduce environmental impact and costs; Pillar II: improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and Pillar III: provide effective environmental education that teaches many disciplines and is especially good at effectively incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, civic skills, and green career pathways.
Update on Science Building, Natatorium Space and Aquatic Center
After a presentation of several options, followed by extensive discussions at the August 15 Board workshop, the CCUSD School Board passed a resolution at the August 22 Board meeting to locate the new HS/MS Science building in the back of the school area by the Lacrosse field. (See image above.) Middle and High School administration were part of the discussion and shared that the highlighted location is ideal for their shared needs. You can see on the layout that, because of where the building will be placed, we can add another similar building in the future along the same space.

The former Natatorium space will be setup as a temporary parking lot by the end of October. The district will be developing plans for how to best use this space in the near future and the community will have an opportunity to provide input on those plans.
Plans for an aquatic center pool are still being discussed with the City.

West End Hotel to Get 1920s Era Facelift
Long an eyesore adjacent to the CCUSD District Office, the West End Hotel will soon be getting a major facelift. Developer Grifka Group is looking to give the 49-room hotel an upscale makeover, with an added restaurant, bar, courtyard dining area, and a new lobby. The guest rooms will be “completely renovated” with “high end materials and design.” Some lucky guests will also have access to private courtyards and seating areas.
A rendering on the Grifka Group’s website suggests that the building’s tan-colored faced will be repainted in a dark blue color.

Check out more about the plans for the hotel on Curbed LA here.
