October 28, 2016

A while ago I mentioned that, by popular demand, we are installing picnic shelters in three of our parks around town.  At the time it was sunny and I was envisioning lots of families enjoying the nice weather in the shade of a nice structure.  However, as I look out my window today, I have decided to, instead, announce the construction of new rain shelters at three of our parks!  Picnics can happen in any weather - bring a thermos of hot cocoa and some chili and enjoy the peacefulness of watching the rain trickle down around you.  The outdoors beckons in all weather.

Here's the schedule:  Beginning the week of November 7, you will see construction begin on four rain (!) structures at Veterans Park.  During the week of November 14 work will begin on structures at Silver Oak Park and Community Park.  All work will be complete by November 30, and will include new picnic tables and barbeques, perfect for your rainy-day outings (and maybe sunny-day outings as well).  Once completed, you will be able to reserve the picnic areas through at the Parks and Recreation office.  Enjoy!

P.S. City offices will be closed on Friday, November 11th in observance of Veteran's Day

Since our last update
Your City Council met on October 18th and considered several matters.  Among them, the Council authorized the purchase of a new Type 6 (wild land) fire truck and we expect delivery of the $218,000 apparatus in eight months.  Additionally, the Council heard a report about the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program in American Canyon and approved the hiring of a new Sustainability Coordinator to improve the community's efforts at reducing water and energy consumption and ensuring City practices are environmentally sustainable.  You can watch the meeting here.

On the Agenda
The Council will meet again next Tuesday, November 1st,  at 6:30 PM in the Council Chambers. The Council will receive a report from Boy Scout Troop 7062 and congratulate Thomas Hall for reaching Eagle Scout rank.  The Council will also consider triennial updates to our building and fire codes; a contract to resurface the city pool; the purchase of replacement vehicles; and to accept the new recycled water tank as  complete.  Staff will discuss with the Council a contract to design the trail access into Newell Open Space in order to prepare for construction of this grant-funded project next summer.  Wait, there's more...the Council will also consider a proposal to create a master plan for a new park at Clarke Ranch and welcome Julia Cummings as the new honorary youth member on the Parks and Community Services Commission.  Read all the details here.

Meet Layla

October is National Pitbull Awareness Month! For the month of October, all of our bully breeds will be 50% off the normal adoption fee! Normal adoption procedures apply. Check out our Facebook page throughout October for information and highlights on our cute pitties!

This is Layla, trying out a costume for Halloween.  She is very much a staff and volunteer favorite. Whether she is out on a walk with Eva, one of our many devoted dog walkers, or helping Kelly, our shelter supervisor, in the front office, Layla is beloved by all. She is one of Eva's favorites because she is such a goofball, very affectionate and always willing to strike a pose for a photo! Layla is an American Staffie mix who was an owner surrender. She is a bundle of energy and can be great around children. Layla loves her toys, especially the ones with a squeeker in them. Come by for a visit and don't miss out on this sweetie pie!  Ask for Layla #15534.

Feel free to call us at  707-253-4382   for more information on this misunderstood breed.

Public Works Updates

Annual Pavement Management
The pavement management project is scheduled to begin soon, weather permitting, and will take about two weeks.  Intermountain Slurry Seal, Inc. will be applying an asphalt emulsion seal coat that will rejuventate and extend the service life of streets that are in good condition and can benefit from preventive maintenance.  Notices will be given to residents and signs will be posted 72 hours in advance of work on a particular street.
The following streets are scheduled:  Biella Court,    Broadway South,    Cartagena,    Donaldson from SR 29 to Newell Drive,    Newell Drive,    Northrup from Chaucer to the west end,    Palestrina Court and Drive,    Rio Del Mar,    Silver Oak Trail,    Via Bellagio,    Wetlands Edge and  West American Canyon Road.

No vehicles will be allowed on the street during application of the seal.  Please watch for "No Parking" signs and avoid the construction area as much as possible.  Crews will be working from 7 AM to 5 PM.

Vine Gap Trail
The Vine Trail Gap Project has filled a ¼ mile gap in the Vine Trail system between Silver Oak Park and Silver Oak Trail.  The Dedication and ribbon cutting are scheduled for November 1st  at 4  PM.  Click here for the flyer.

Napa Junction Road
The delineators (orange poles) in the street on Napa Junction Road between the Chevron and Napa Junction III will remain up until at least Spring.  Please drive with caution through this area as the delineators may move on occasion due to ongoing road construction.
SS4 Broadway Sanitary Sewer Main Replacement
The project on the corner of American Canyon Road and SR29 will replace the existing  sanitary sewer main as outlined in the Sewer Master Plan that was approved by Council earlier this year.  All site prep is  complete and the crew has begun replacing the old 10 inch sewer main with the new 15 inch sewer main.

450 Green Island Road
A 258,000 sq ft warehouse is being constructed at 450 Green Island Road.  The very impressive floor, or slab as the inspector called it, has been completed.  The concrete wall forms are now being built flat on the floor where they will be filled with concrete.  As soon as they cure the Contractor will stand them up into place.

Parks & Recreation Updates

Tree planting at Shenandoah Park
American Canyon has a brand new tree at Shenandoah Park, just in time for the upcoming Holiday Tree Lighting. Coordinating the transportation and planting of the massive Blue Spruce from Washington State was exciting and challenging. The beautiful tree is a wonderful addition to our community, and will allow our holiday events to grow. Mark your calendars for the Holiday Tree Lighting on December 2, 2016 at the new location.

Pool Maintenance Closure Reminder
The Phillip West Aquatic Center will be closed for all activities and programming November 5, 2016 through January 2, 2017 while the pool bottom is resurfaced. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we work to improve our facility, and look forward to having a revitalized pool for the new year.

The new Winter/Spring 2016-2017 Activity Guide will be mailed to American Canyon homes in the next couple weeks. This guide covers programming and events from December 2016 through April 2017. We have exciting programs to look forward to, including the return of Starbound Theatre with the production, Snow White in the Enchanted Forest, as well as a youth Indoor Futsal League, and adult 3V3 Basketball League. Families will also get a look at our Magic of the Season events, with the annual Holiday Tree Lighting, Snow Day, Holiday Decorating Contest & Tour, and I Spy a Candycane event. General registration opens on Wednesday, November 16, 2016. Please visit our website for additional information or contact Parks and Recreation staff at 707-648-7275.
