Miss Andrea recommends The Quilts of Gee's Bend by Susan Goldman Rubin
In a small community in Alabama there is a rich history of quilt making. Starting in the late 1800s when many African Americans found new places to live and farmed the land, women from the Gee's Bend community came together to quilt using scraps of cloth they collected. Each quilt sewn was a reflection of the woman who made it, with beautiful, intricate patterns that are works of art. Eventually the small town of Gee's Bend became known for its history of quilt making and many quilts were acquired for museum exhibits.
The Quilts of Gee's Bend is a fascinating piece of American History. I highly recommend this book for upper elementary kids who enjoy history and art. The book also provides a window into the lives and struggles of African Americans throughout the civil rights movement and beyond. The quilts are displayed throughout the country on a rotating basis, so there may be opportunity in the future for readers to see them. I was fortunate enough to see the exhibit at the Whitney Museum several years ago and was excited to see that a book had been written about the history of the quilts and the people who made them.
