St. Paul's Church

October 28, 2016

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness." (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

Dear St. Paul's,

You know what?  Someone told me that there's a big election coming up in a few days.  Imagine that!  As you probably already know, I will be in Israel with the group of 20 pilgrims from November 3-12, so we will miss the big day.  But I can assure you that we will vote before we go and we will be praying for our beloved nation on November 8 th.  I hope that you will join us in praying for the nation (see the prayer below), and that the Lord would touch the pilgrims' hearts in a profound way while we are in the Holy Land.

We all know that there's been no small amount of drama surrounding this election.  And while many of us are looking forward to going back to life without drama and politics 24/7, it's also possible that the deep divisions from which our country suffers will linger for a period of time.  Regardless of who wins, the fight will continue for some.

But at St. Paul's, we will follow God's direction in 1 Timothy 2, and we will pray for the new president and ALL those in authority.  Right now, I'm reading Stephen Mansfield's book, Lincoln's Battle with God.  Abraham Lincoln went from being a fierce critic of the Bible and the Christian faith when he was a young man to being a strong defender of the faith while he was President during the Civil War.   I have no doubt that Lincoln's transformation came as the result of the faithful prayers of the saints.

So please join me in praying now and in the days ahead.

Gratefully in Christ,

Pr. Jon

Wednesday Night Bible Study

Class meets at the church office building, downstairs in the realty office, same location and room used previously.  The study, led by Pastor Jon, will be on the Gospel of Luke. We will start with chapter 9. (This is where Dean left off at the Sunday morning class.)

Men's Ministry -"Promise Keepers "- Fridays

A PRAYER FOR THE NATION

Dear Heavenly Father,

We praise you that dominion belongs to you, and you rule the nations.  We thank you for the great privilege of living in the United States.  We thank you for the blessings that you have bestowed on this nation.

Forgive us for all of the ways that we have turned away and sinned against you.  We repent and turn back to you.  We acknowledge you as Lord of all.  Heal all of our wounds by the Blood of the Lamb.

Lord, have mercy on us during this election season.  We cry out to you on behalf of all candidates, that you would raise up faithful leaders among us.  Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, giving us discernment to make wise choices as we cast our votes.  We confess that we are lost without you.

We pray for unity in the Body of Christ and the nation.  "A house divided cannot stand."  Regardless of who is elected, bring us to perfect unity under the banner of your truth.  Let your justice and freedom reign for all people.

We pray this in Jesus' Name,

Amen

Building Faith. Transforming Lives.

Campaign Update

As of Sunday, October 23, we have received Building Fund pledges totaling $460,000 toward our goal of $1,350,000.  So, we have made a good start, but clearly we have a long way to go.

Fortunately, the Internal Revenue Code provides some real tax breaks for charitable giving, in addition to donation deductibility for those who itemize.

For example, for those donors 70½ or older, your IRA administrator can transfer funds directly to St. Paul's Church.  Done properly, such transfers up to $100,000/year escape federal and state income tax entirely and also count toward your annual required minimum distribution.

For more information, please contact the church office 772.231.3552 or Dean Sparks 772.234.2398.
