Veteran's Day program letter

Shayla U. is the First Class Student in Mr. Theisen's second grade classroom.  Shayla has been a tremendous part of our classroom and has really become a 2nd grader that her peers look up to. She brings her great sense of humor and positive attitude with her every time she walks into the classroom. Whether she is telling a silly joke or just being herself, Shayla truly knows how to put a smile on the faces of those around her. She is always willing to contribute to classroom discussions and never shies away from lending a helping hand to a classmate. Shayla continues to prove what a dedicated and hard-working young girl she is. Shayla is really making room 115 a better place!

We all want it—the calm family we read about in parenting books; the happy family that laughs and plays together in harmony.  But is that possible?  How can we create a calm family?  Here are six steps we can take today to move us towards achieving this goal.  One step at a time, one day at a time, one moment at a time…

Be a positive role model: If you respond calmly to stressful or challenging situations, your children will learn to do the same.  When you are angry or overwhelmed, take a “parent break,” and explain that you need to cool down so you can think clearly.  Then come back and discuss your feelings and set up a family plan for how to deal with situations like this in the future.  Also, explain what you need them to do and which consequences may arise if they do not follow the family plan.  Stay calm and tell yourself, “I’m calm.  I am in control.  I can handle this.” Trust me, I know this is difficult, and we might not be able to do it every time, in every situation, but explaining to our children that we are trying stay calm and in control is in itself a wonderful example too!

Talk about feelings: Remind your children that ALL feelings are okay. It’s what you do with them that matters!  It is normal to get angry, but it is not okay to physically or verbally harm someone else or yourself when you are angry.  Explain this to them, and model it for them.  It may be difficult and will take some practice and patience, but it will help your family remain calm and in control of all types of feelings!

Build routines: Humans crave routine; routines are the building blocks of stability!  Write down morning, evening, and bedtime routines.  Obviously flexibility must be maintained, but sticking to your normal daily routine as much as possible will ward off stress and allow you to avoid some of the those emotional “meltdowns.”

Eat meals together: This is a great time to connect and share ups and downs of your day or to set goals for the day.  You can also model problem-solving skills together.  I know how crazy schedules can become, so even just sitting down to have a snack together without any electronic distractions can mean a great deal too!  Our children enjoy being with us, even if they act like they don’t at times!

Have a code: When tempers start to flare and things start to heat up, have a special code word that any family member should use to pause the conversation, take a break, and come back once everyone has calmed down and can think clearly again.  This is an excellent way for children to begin to realize when they are too upset to think clearly.  If we can teach them to “STOP! THINK! CHOOSE!” we are giving them a life skill they can use in the real world, so they make effective choices throughout their lives.  It is one way to raise responsible citizens.

We had our FIRST authors celebration of the year today in 2nd grade! Each student wrote a narrative small moment story about something that they did. First graders from Mrs Rocco's class came in to hear our stories too!
