What's new with SACSA?!
September 2017 SACSAlert

Hello SACSA Members,

I must admit, this has been a challenging month for the SACSA Region between Virginia, Texas, and now Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia. Our hearts and thoughts go out to those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Irma. Our region needs our help and I would encourage you to take a moment and see how you may be able to assist those in need. My recommendation is to donate to the Red Cross as we know the money will in fact go to those needing it the most, but there are other organizations assisting as well. You can find some helpful information on donating from this NPR article.

This is also the time when the Fall Semester begins for a large majority of us. We can utilize this time to help students understand the world is a bigger place than themselves. Events such as these have a tendency to bring people together and help us realize that we are all vulnerable to disaster.

In terms of some SACSA news, we are gearing up towards the conference in Chattanooga and working on nominations. Thank you to everyone who has voted on the proposed bylaw changes, if you have not, please take a moment to do so. A link should have been emailed to you. We have also been busy rebranding the organization and will reveal a SACSA new logo at the conference.

Chief Student Affairs Officers

Professional Development Workshop
Lead by:
Dr. Vicky Triponey, former Vice President for Student Affairs at Penn State

Session Description:
"Giving Voice to Conscience:  Lessons Learned from the Inside"

For this session, the "woman who stood up to Joe Paterno," will share an inside view of her experience within the senior leadership circle and will engage participants in a conversation about the critical work we do every day to prepare college students to be ethical and principle-centered leaders and active citizens. In this "off the record" quiet space, senior leaders in student affairs will have the opportunity to probe more deeply into the experience and work together to identify warning signs that might prompt others to step forward, take a stand, and "give voice to conscience" to enable us to address some of the most difficult and perplexing issues on our campuses and in our communities.  By examining details of this real-life case study, leaders at the executive level will focus on the painful yet necessary lessons learned that have the potential, if embraced with conviction and courage, to strengthen our resolve to ensure that this kind of tragedy will never happen again.

Making the Jump from the Field to the Classroom
Higher education and student affairs program faculty often enter the field after being practitioners. The transition from an administrator to a faculty member can be a mysterious process with myths about differences in lifestyles, time commitments, and job expectations. Professionals often have questions about research agendas, publish or perishing, teaching, and advising masters and doctoral students. In this workshop, we will discuss these issues along with expectations of new faculty, the job search process, transitioning from being a student affairs administrator to faculty, the tenure process, and producing a research agenda.

Monday, October 30th 9:45-10:45am; Hardy Room

Faculty-Led HESA Study Abroad Experience: Lessons Learned
Graduate students in the Higher Education Student Affairs program at Western Carolina University participated in a 10-day study abroad experience to Kenya, where they were immersed in the country's culture and studied the higher education system. They also gained insight into the role of planning and leading a study abroad trip while helping to guide and develop the undergraduate students present, who were studying the K-12 Kenyan education system. In this session, we will discuss the course details, trip logistics, and lessons learned for other faculty or practitioners looking to lead graduate students in a short term study abroad experience.
April Perry*, Western Carolina University
