TAKE BACK THE NIGHT IS THIS SUNDAY - We will gather at 5PM in the church parking lot to walk to LSU Memorial Tower for a resource fair, free food, a candlelight vigil, and a community march. Join with us to shatter the silence around sexual assault and to stop gender-based violence.

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT
Sunday. October 23rd at 5-8PM
LSU Memorial Tower

Join members of our church and several campus and community organizations at LSU's  Memorial Tower for the 30th annual Take Back the Night Vigil and March. We will honor and recognize those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence, engage our community in culture change, and encourage active bystander intervention. This event will include free food and drinks, a resource fair, live entertainment, a candlelight vigil, a survivor speak-out, and a community march. If you plan to attend, check out the event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/283678105323632/

We invite people to wear their UUMC t-shirts (if they have one) and gather at the church at 5PM to walk over to the event together.

Our church is also collecting battery-operated tea light candles for the prayer vigil. You can drop off tea lights in Rev. Colleen's office. We will need a few hundred tealights to make sure everyone at the event has a candle.

Please join our church and members of the Baton Rouge community as we stand against domestic violence and sexual assault in our community.
THE PUMPKINS ARE HERE!!!

Plan to buy your pumpkins with us! All proceeds from sales of the pumpkins will help support the youth mission trip next summer! Also, If you have time to work the Pumpkin Patch in October, please let Stew or Susannah Craig know. There will be a sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall.

Our Harvest Festival was amazing!
Thank you for joining us!

The 2016 Harvest Festival was a Sweet Treat thanks to so many Volunteers who came out to help!  Thank you all for pitching in to run games, provide Trunks, paint faces, grill burgers and dogs, supervise the inflatables and work the Welcome Table. I especially appreciate all of the help with set-up and tear-down (we were out of here at 7:03 PM and everything was put away!). It was a long, hot and steamy day, but the smiles on the kids and adult faces made it all worthwhile. I've told several people that I was mighty impressed by the number of adults without small children who came out to help. What a wonderful Welcome that was for our guests!

To recap the festivities:
    1st Place Trunk -
Debra & Will Hadden's "Lego and Let God"
    2nd Place Trunk -
Susan Horton's "The Great Pumpkin"

1st Place Chili - Randa Patrick
2nd Place Chili - Charles Reeves

Candy Corn Guess - Cole Buckner

Special Thanks to our Donations and Sponsors:
Velcro Wall - The Albright Family in honor of the Open Door Class
    Cupcakes - Foundations Class
Candy for Games - Tuesday Night Wesley Group
Face Paint Supplies - the Reeves Family
Game Prizes - the Love Family
Trunks - the Haddens, the Hendersons, Susan Horton, the Tuesday Night Wesley Group,  the Genesis Class, Jessica Broussard/Nursery, and Toi Davis/Preschool.

Thanks Again!
Vicki

PS - I am compiling a list of things to consider for next year and I would appreciate any helpful feedback you'd care to share. Email me at [email protected]!

Don't miss out on the change to purchase a stained glass window in honor or memory of a loved one!

During our Anniversary Luncheon, Mary Michael Staples announced the effort of the Trustees to "Light the Bell Tower."  These attractive half-moon windows are designed by Paulo Dufour and  feature a variety of Biblical musical instruments.  They will be lit from within the tower so that they might be seen across the lake.  Our bell tower will become a beacon of light for our church for years to come.  With installation, the price per window is $2000.  The windows will take 4-6 months to construct and install.  We only have one more of these available so if you are interested please let the office know ASAP. Payments must be completed by March 30, 2017.

In addition to the tower windows we have two oblong windows facing the Columbarium that are also available for purchase.  Each section of those windows is $2000. You may purchase one section of these windows, or consider making a purchase for the whole window! This would be a great group purchase, such as Sunday School classes or Small Groups wanting to make a purchase together.

Please email Mary Michael Staples ([email protected]) about purchasing a window or come by the church office and see the drawings in Ruthie Fahey's office to reserve yours. Additionally, you may call the church office to reserve your window - 344-0343.

You may not know this but University UMC has a Meal Ministry that provides meals to families in times of need.

These meals may be provided after the loss of a family member, for families when someone is hospitalized or recuperating from sickness or surgery, and for new Moms.

Sign up to help!

If you would like to be notified when the next opportunity comes up, all you have to do is send an e-mail to [email protected] and let Kelly know you want to be added to the list.  This does not obligate you to provide a meal, it just notifies you when there is an opportunity to provide one.

To view or sign up to help with our current Meals Ministry Need, please visit this link: http://www.takethemameal.com/meals.php?t=KMNQ8291

Why is the Meal Ministry is Important?

When we're struggling, we want to know that someone cares. When a person is experiencing loss, illness, hardship, stress, it's a great opportunity to show them that we recognize their need, we care, and we're taking action. One of the simplest ways to bless people is to provide meals. We all have to eat right? Meals are an easy way to bless someone and show them that people care. Our hope is that, as you become more and more connected by building relationships at UUMC, you are naturally caring for others, and others are caring for you.  What's great is that when we're truly connected and living life with other people, we can recognize needs beyond meals, such as helping with housework, babysitting, giving gifts, and more.

The UUMC Meal Ministry is made up of people who are willing to cook (or order take out) and deliver meals to those who need them. Recipients can expect to receive somewhere between 6-10 meals over the course of a few weeks.

Please consider signing up to receive updates when we have Meal Ministry needs within our Church Community. Also, if you know of anyone within our church who may need assistance with meals during a trying time, please contact the church office and let us know!

Because of the floods in our area, Habitat for Humanity has struggled to find volunteers for the the homes they are building this fall. They have asked if we can supply workers to paint the interior of the Methodist Build house on Saturday, November 5th. It's hard to believe that the house whose walls we raised in mid-September will be ready to be painted. But it is!

We know that there are many other activities happening on November 5th, but we welcome people coming for as many or as few hours as you are available. Please sign up to work on the sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall. We will meet at 8AM at 267 E McKinley St. on November 5th. Lunch will be provided by another group.
