The Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education, led by
Dr. Daniel Flannery, is home to a distinguished group of
applied community-based research, evaluation, training, and technical assistance specialists in operation over the past two decades. With
grants and contracts of nearly $5M annually, our center serves as a research partner to various local, state and national non-profit, foundation and government organizations to learn innovative ways to
address some of society's most pressing problems.
Advisory Board Spotlight
Dennis Embry is serious about doing good for children, families, and communities. That's why he founded PAXIS Institute to make gold-standard behavioral science into real-world products. Presently, the Institute is focusing on preventing psychiatric and behavioral disorders.
Bobbi Beale provides training, consultation, and technical assistance to behavioral health service providers as part of the
Center for Innovative Practices. She joined the Begun Center after 25 years as a clinical psychologist. She is an Adventure Therapist and has launched her own nonprofit,
Life Adventures for All.
Margaret Baughman-Sladkyworks with specialty dockets (courts) that provide specialized services for defendants with particular issues including substance abuse, mental health, addiction, and other challenges and disorders. This holistic work meets the needs of defendants, helping to break the cycle of recidivism.
A new article in the Journal of Criminal Justice explores how DNA testing of previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits can lead to the identification of offending patterns for serial sex offenders. The article was co-authored by Rachel Lovell, Misty Luminais, Daniel Flannery, Laura Overman, Duoduo Huang, Tiffany Walker, and Dan Clark.

Bobbi Beale has been elected president of the Board of Directors of the
Association for Experiential Education. AEE is an international organization dedicated to advancing experiential learning around the world.

Leon Harris has been hired by Cuyahoga County as
Deputy Director of Performance Evaluation & Innovation. Leon will be responsible for managing the performance, evaluation and innovation programs for 2,200+ employees within the Department of Health and Human Services. He will continue to pursue his PhD in Social Welfare at the Mandel School.
