PINE CAR DERBY

Good Samaritan Episcopal Church on Union Avenue in San Jose is holding its second annual PINE CAR DERBY.

September 23, 2017
Registration begins July 16 and ends August 7.  All ages welcome.

Car kits are $5 each.

Additional details & registration forms are available in the St. Stephen's Office.

This Sunday is the 8th Sunday after Pentecost. The 8:00 am and 10:00 am services will be presided over by the Rev. John Buenz. I always enjoy having John Buenz supply for us.

The washing and painting of St. Stephen's Church outside walls will be completed by the time you come on Sunday morning so be ready for a new look. I haven't seen it yet but I am very excited. Thank you Ann Little and Andy Lief, and all those on the Beautification committee for the work and talent you put into this project.

Just a reminder that the Golf Tournament is coming up on August 28, 2017. Please mark your calendars. You have the choice of playing golf and coming for the dinner that evening, or if you are not a golfer, like me, or cannot golf that day, you can still come for the fantastic dinner that evening. We always have a lot of fun and the food is tasty and the music is awesome. We can even set up carpools if anyone needs a ride.

Golf Tournament baskets are due at St. Stephens on August 13, 2017 for display. This gives St. Stephen's a chance to buy raffle tickets for their favorite basket (s).   The baskets are a very important part of the Golf Tournament fund raiser. Many congregation members put time, love, and money into creating these baskets and they are phenomenal.

Please keep the vestry and the Rector Search Committee in your prayers. The vestry is working hard to keep St. Stephen's operating smoothly and the Rector Search Committee is working hard to create our church profile.   Please pray that God will guide us all and that we will have open hearts and minds as we make decisions for the church during this transition.

Save the Date: Bishop Mary is leading a Transition Retreat for us on Sept. 15 (Friday evening) and Sept. 16, 2017 at St. Stephen's church. More details to come. Bishop Mary will lead us through reflective discernment as we search for a new priest. Please mark your calendar because it is very important that you attend and participate in the retreat.

Reminders:
Please bring in dry food for the Food Basket for St. Julie's and pocket change for the Food for the Poor Jar.
Please look at the Angel's Board to see if there are any tasks that need to be added or tasks that you want to volunteer to do.

There is one task that urgently needs to be done this weekend. The church will be power washed and painted beginning Monday, July 24, 2017. It will be a week-long project. We need volunteers to take down the canopy over the back patio this weekend. If you are able to help, please let Tom Good or me know.

Also, remember Andy Lief is putting together a list of tasks that need to be done for the Beautification of St. Stephen's Project. Please let him know if you have tasks to add.

Back-to-School Drives
Through July 31

UPDATE: St. Stephen's wrote a check to SMUM this week for $395 to cover the cost of seven pairs of shoes and 11 calculators.  Thank you to those who donated to this project.  If you would still like to donate, you will need to donate directly to SMUM online as follows:

In case you missed the details in the past two weeks of Friday Journals, following is a description of this year's Back-to-School Drive:

SHOES FOR SOULS:   $25 buys a child new shoes
Every child likes to start school with a new pair of shoes, but many families simply cannot afford them.  Donate to "Shoes for Souls" and help one child.

IT ALL ADDS UP$20 buys a child a scientific calculator
Or support a high school student by giving to their "It All Adds Up" drive, and provide $20 for a scientific calculator.

THANK YOU ST. STEPHEN'S

SOUTH SUDANESE YOUTH OPPORTUNITY (SSYO)

Term 3 SSYO Student Tuition payments are due by Sunday, August 13.  Sponsors will receive an email reminder from Caroline Conway with amount pledged.

The treasurer will be forwarding one check from St. Stephen's to the Diocese the week of August 13.

If you are not currently a sponsor, and you would like to make a donation to support our students with books, school supplies, shoes, etc., you are welcome to give a donation of any amount, and it will be forwarded on your behalf.  For more information about this program, you may talk to Caroline Conway or Julie Zintsmaster.

UPCOMING BIBLE STUDY

The next Bible Study series is a Kerygma course on
The Parables -- Stories for Life in God's World.

Edy Unthank will lead the seven-week class on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am beginning September 12 through October 24.

Cost of the class is  $20/person to cover cost of materials.  Scholarships are available upon request.

If there is enough interest for an evening session of this course, we will determine the best evening based on interest and recruit a leader.

Please let Edy know if you are interested in attending the morning course or an evening course, so she knows how many copies to purchase.

You may send an email to [email protected].  Or call the church office at 408-629-1836.
GOLF TOURNAMENT
THE ST. STEPHEN'S ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT IS COMING SOON.....

It's time again to start thinking about:
THEME BASKETS FOR THE GOLF
TOURNAMENT RAFFLE

Every year we make over a thousand dollars with our beautiful, creative theme baskets.  Please start thinking about what you might want to do this year and we will put together a list in the next few weeks.....

Tom Good, Tournament Chair

Edy Unthank is putting together a "Community Basket"  with a wine theme.  If you would like to donate a bottle of wine, a set of wine glasses, a cork screw, napkins, or other wine related item, please talk to Edy.

ANGELS OF ST. STEPHEN'S

Thank you to the following "Angels of St. Steph en's" who took care of an Angel List item this week:
  • Petrina for removing the cobwebs behind all of the window blinds in the church.
  • Andy Lief for arranging for the painters to power wash and paint the exterior of the church.  We have a whole new look!

New to the list:

    • Become the congregation's Health & Wellness Ambassador.  Send cards and make wellness check phone calls on behalf of the congregation to members who are home bound, recovering from surgery, or ill. Recruit a co-ambassador or a team of ambassadors.  (See Dottie Chin)
    • If you see a need, please call the church office at 408-629-1836 so we can add it to the list.
CALLING ALL ANGELS !
LET'S KEEP ST. STEPHEN'S SHINING

PRAY FOR THE RECTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE

Dear Lord, Heavenly Father, we, the people of St. Stephen's ask for your blessings on the members of the Search Committee.  Bless them in their meetings, in their deliberations and in their discernment.  Keep their hearts and minds open to the Holy Spirit and to wherever You will lead them in this process.

Guide them in their deliberations while they prepare the St. Stephen's Profile which will be posted to the National Office of Transitional Ministry (OTM).  Please allow this process to be completed with ease and joy.

We trust you and we know that you will bring us the best possible Rector for St. Stephen's as you have done for us before.  Thank you, Heavenly Father for all your blessings on the Search Committee and this congregation. AMEN

Please pray daily for our Search Committee......

GIFT CARD PROGRAM...   by Janet Thorsrud

Hello my friends.

This Sunday is the day to turn in your order for any gift cards you need.

Some of you have already turned in your order. They will be placed on Sunday. You will have them by Aug 6th.

Shop with Scrip is offering some great bonuses right now. For example:

Amazon 5.5% instead of 2.5%
Itunes 10% instead of 5%
Barnes and Nobles 10% instead of 8%
Bath and Body works 18 % instead of 13%
Bed bath and beyond 8% instead of 7%

There are many more included in the link Julie provided in last weeks Friday Journal (available here).

I hope you are able to take advantage of them as it earns more funds for St. Stephen's.

Remember if you are ordering from an old form and you need Safeway cards, they are now available. Just write in on the bottom of the form how much you want.

See you Sunday.
