Stanley Horowitz said that "winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.
" This rings true when we consider the beauty of each of our seasons and dear autumn, holding both invigoration as well as the impulse to go inward, allows us the space to view what was and what will become. Autumn at Prairie Hill ends the swell of outreach under the sun at markets and expos and begins the season of festival; a true mosaic of fun, community, reverence and beauty.
We've already enjoyed a chilly yet productive and exciting Festival of Courage - Michaelmas and saw how we too can tame our dragons as we go into the darker months. Now we are readying for The Festival of Community - Lantern Walk, our much anticipated Yuletide Faire and the Advent Spiral. Please read on to what lies ahead for autumn at Prairie Hill...

Festival of Community - Martinmas
Lantern Walk
Friday, November 4
5:30 p.m.
Martinmas or the "Festival of Community" takes place at the beginning of November. Based on the story of St. Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier who abandoned his position of high rank and wealth to devote his life to serving the poor. This festival invites us to join with others to carry and follow the lantern light through the gathering darkness. At Prairie Hill, we meet behind the school, light our lanterns, many of which the children have made during class time and listen to the story of Martin.
We then go on an enchanted lighted walk through the
meadow
followed by shared community time with light refreshments.

Early Childhood Morning Adventure

9 - 10:30 a.m.
Join us with your child(ren) for this sampler and experience a morning in a Prairie Hill Kindergarten and Wonder Garden classroom. The adventure includes creative play, observation, snack, outdoor time and an opportunity to have your questions answered. Experience firsthand how Waldorf early childhood lays the foundation for your child's life long love of learning.

Annual Yuletide Faire
Friday, November 18th
5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Come discover the special magic of the
medieval past! The beloved Yuletide Faire, in its 29th year is Lake Country's premier arts & crafts festival. The school is transformed into a fantasy world, put together and run by parent volunteers, faculty and staff. Entertainment abounds with live local musical acts as well as strolling minstrels and costumed characters such as the beloved Muffin Man, Pocket Lady, Pickle Man, and others. Children's attractions this year include the one-of-a-kind Children's Marketplace, The Wee Tots Theater, Excalibur, Face Painting and Craft Workshops. Experience the very best of independent arts presented in this vibrant and magical marketplace. Among the abundant holiday shopping opportunities at Yuletide Faire are a raffle, book sale, toys made from natural materials and handcrafted items from more than 30 artisans. Other highlights include breakfast and luncheon fare from the Winter Kitchen, decadent desserts from the Dessert Cafe and a la carte sweet treats from the Sweet Shoppe. Festival of Light - Advent Spiral
Friday, December 2
Open to the Community 2:50 - 3:15 p.m.
Sit quietly and listen to peaceful music as a candle is lit in the center o
f a spiral of evergreen
boughs, a symbol of life amidst the dead of winter. Each visitor will take a turn, walk to the center of the spiral and light an apple candle to place along the path. The lights brighten the path for those who come after.
This is a celebration of quiet confidence, of carrying light in darkness, of sharing that light with others.
The word "Advent" means "coming" or "arrival." This seasonal observance has been kept by people around the world from all paths and beliefs. As autumn gives way to winter, we prepare for the return of the sun, the lengthening of days, and for the insights that we can gain from reflection on the year that has been and on what may be to come. Prairie Hill classes take turns visiting the advent spiral during the day - Open to the public from 2:50 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. only.

Prairie Hill's Grade 8 Brightens the Social Media World with Song
Over 9,000 "views"
Last month we posted a video that is more audio than video on P.H.'s Facebook of our Grade 8 students singing "You are the New Day." The class was on their biking field trip and stopped in the tunnel along the Elroy Sparta trail where they were inspired to sing this beautiful tune. The audio/video has spread like wildfire, making this post the most "liked," "viewed," "shared," "reached," and "commented on" in Prairie Hill history. We have had people from Oregon, Pennsylvania, California and as far as Palestine message us with compliments and praise.
