Suicide Prevention Week 2017prevention

September is Suicide Prevention Month - and this week is National Suicide Prevention Week.
Are you participating to help spread awareness and prevent suicide? Here are some ways you can get involved:
  • Listen - Entercom radio stations (WAAF, WEEI and WRKO and other local affiliates) aired a special 1-hour program about Samaritans and suicide prevention, featuring some of our staff. The podcast of this program is available now at Samaritans WAAF. This followed a special 2- hour broadcast across the country on Entercom's network of stations that you can listen to at ImListening.org.
  • Look - Keep an eye out for Samaritans signs on the T and MassD.O.T billboards. Boston landmarks and the Burns Bridge in Worcester will be illuminated in Samaritans green. The Prudential Tower went green for World Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday.
  • Show - Add the Samaritans Suicide Prevention Week frame to your Facebook profile picture to demonstrate your support.
  • Tell - The theme of Suicide Prevention Week this year is Take a Minute, Change a Life. Share a story on social media about a time when someone took a minute to help you, or you took the time to help someone else using the hashtag #takeaminutechangealife - or send your story to [email protected]
  • Share - Tell your friends and family about Samaritans' 24/7 call or text Helpline, and give them the number: 877-870-HOPE (4673).
  • Run (or walk) - Sign up for Samaritans 5K Run/Walk for Suicide Prevention on September 23rd at Artesani Park. Learn more at samaritans5k.org

Crisis Servicescrisis
It's been almost 2 years since we have launched texting on the Massachusetts Statewide Helpline at 877-870-HOPE (4673). We have had great success in providing help to more people with this service.  Texting has been an alternative option for those who are not comfortable calling the helpline.  Below are just some comments on the impacts of this service:

"I am tremendously grateful that the text option for the crisis line exists! Calling via phone is not always possible. I felt heard and acknowledged, and that is really what I needed in order to go from feeling frantic/in crisis to feeling much more calm, in control, and able to look toward tomorrow."

"Thanks so much for hearing me. It's been so hard, it took me a long time to text in tonight but it was worth it because I've stayed safe"

Grief Support Services UpdatesGrief
  • Beginning this month, our Framingham SafePlace group will be moving to the South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC) located at 7 Bishop Street in Framingham. The first meeting at the new location will be September 13. The group will continue to meet as scheduled on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 7 - 8:30pm. We invite you to join us here or at any of our other SafePlace locations to give and receive support following a loss to suicide.
Please note that parking and the entrance for SMOC is located in the rear of the building. Visit our website at   www.samaritanshope.org/our-services/grief-support-services/ for more information.
  • Hope FLOATS support group - for loved ones of attempt survivors - is open to new participants for the next closed-group session. Meeting weekly from October 3 - November 7, individuals supporting a suicide attempt survivor or a loved one struggling with suicidality have an opportunity to join a community of peers who understand, find a space to share their personal experiences, and learn healthy coping skills while supporting their loved ones in their daily lives.  Contact us at  [email protected] to begin the intake process.
  • Grief Support Services Volunteer Training is being held in October for loss survivors who are interested in joining our team of support group and home-visit facilitators. Here, volunteers learn the skills to create a safe environment that provides an atmosphere for hope and healing.

"What helped the most was meeting people who have also lost loved ones to suicide, which made me feel less lonely and understood, so it would be nice to meet other people and share my experience in hopes of making them feel the same."

Education and Outreach education
Lauren Gablinske- Director, Community Education & Outreach
One of the best parts of doing outreach in the community is when we're able to collaborate and learn from other groups, organizations, and people that are working towards many of the same goals that we are. We had such an opportunity at the recent meeting of the Eastern Middlesex County Opioid Task Force, an initiative spearheaded by District Attorney Marian Ryan. At this meeting, experts were brought in to discuss the correlation between opioid deaths and suicide. Unfortunately, Middlesex County has seen a sharp increase in drug-related suicides and they are looking for resources and ideas on how to combat this tragedy.

At the meeting a representative from Riverside Trauma Center spoke, followed by a professor from Harvard, followed by Samaritans. We had an opportunity to present on Samaritans' services and how we can be a resource, how to help someone who may be suicidal, and building up resiliency and coping skills. It was an honor to be able to present alongside such incredible and knowledgeable people, and it was so well received that we have been asked to come back to present at another upcoming meeting of the Task Force.

Suicide prevention training is an essential community need. If your school, company, or community organization is interested in arranging a training, you can find more information  here, or contact  Lauren.
