Prakash Ellenhorn is a private psychiatric treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation program in Arlington, MA, also offering evidence-based co-occurring treatment. Our best-practice multidisciplinary mobile teams deliver individualized services to clients living in the community or in our residence, intensively supporting them in building connections and purpose in the real world.
Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the establishment of a new program serving New York City. Based in Manhattan, the program provides comprehensive and intensive psychiatric and psychosocial treatment through the evidence-based team method for  delivering  community-integrated services called PACT (Program of Assertive Community Treatment).

We know that many people recover better where they live, rather than somewhere else. We also believe that too many people in New York City are sent away for treatment. Most of the New York clients will already live there, which gives this multidisciplinary mobile team the opportunity to serve them where they live and surrounded by their network, through a robust treatment program that is unique in New York.

We found just the right people to run the New York PACT program: Chris Mooney, LCSW, Clinical Director, and Carlene MacMillan, Team Psychiatrist. They are already doing an amazing job. Chris and Carlene share our philosophy and our focus on the best care for our clients. They are a perfect fit, and we are all beyond excited to welcome them to the Ellenhorn family. The Prakash Ellenhorn management team, including myself, is fully involved in ensuring that the New York program is aligned with our Boston-based PACT program.

The New York program is now accepting referrals and is excited about providing New Yorkers with a very serious, substantial community-integrated mental health treatment alternative.

A New York PACT Program

The  New   York- based PACT team was created using Prakash Ellenhorn's psychosocial philosophy and PACT team model of care.

PACT is the most widely-tested model of psychiatric community care for people with severe and persistent mental illness.  We are excited to offer this level of care in another dynamic, bustling city and look forward to using our psychosocial approach in the Big Apple.

You can reach us at  800-515-9972  or email Laurie Damsky at [email protected] for questions about the program or for referrals.

"This is Planning for Life."
Christopher Mooney
LCSW, Psychotherapist
Clinical Director, New York PACT Program

"The New York program is a true PACT model. We are a 24/7 multidisciplinary team, and every team member is a licensed clinician.  This isn't monitoring or basic coaching.  This is intensive psychiatric and psychosocial treatment, in which each interaction with our clients is a therapeutic event. Our focus on comprehensive recovery  means this isn't just about managing medication or making sure someone is going to groups. This is big picture. This is planning for life.

Our PACT team is allowing New Yorkers to recover in New York with high-level clinical support.  As rich in therapists and clinical services as  New York is, there's a gap in treatment.  People struggle with the application of  the skills learned in outpatient and inpatient facilities. Our team model is built to work within the client's home and community, bringing the treatment to the client and consequently reducing hospitalizations.

I'm excited to be part of the NY PACT program because I get to do the work I truly believe in -- listening to what the client wants and helping them  achieve their goals by working to the client's strengths. I am happy to witness the feeling of fulfillment people have as they  move through this process and reconnect with life. I'm excited  to be part of a team in New York City that helps people do this."

"Call Our Treatment Model a Hospital Without Walls."
Dr. Carlene MacMillan
M.D., Team Psychiatrist

"Although there are many sober living houses and intensive outpatient programs in New York City, there is no free-standing psychiatric hospital. As a result, many New Yorkers who need more intensive psychiatric services have to leave the city for residential programs in other parts of the state or country. That's where the New York PACT program offers a very important alternative. Our PACT team allows people to stay in the city, with all it has to offer -- all the different opportunities for work and culture, and the ability to remain close to family and friends -- while receiving intensive services.

I believe strongly in the effectiveness of the PACT model. As an inpatient attending and outpatient psychiatrist at McLean Hospital and in private practice, I've seen many people sent to residential programs. These can be great -- transitionally. But ultimately, we want to get clients back to living where they came from. At the same time, standard outpatient care is often particularly inadequate for people with a complicated psychiatric history, who simply fall through the cracks.

With a limit of eleven clients per psychiatrist, our PACT team is able to talk together about each case, every day. I'm seeing clients at least weekly versus every one to three months as in standard outpatient psychiatric practice. So you can really call our treatment model a hospital without walls. A client would normally need to be in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, day hospital or residential program to get this level of treatment from different team members so regularly. We can also work well with families and others who are important in our clients' lives. We're not seeing clients in a vacuum; we're seeing them within their social network."

Dr. Carlene MacMillan takes a collaborative and holistic approach to practicing psychiatry that goes beyond medication management. Her training as a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist informs her work with families and deepens her ability to help patients at developmental stages across the life span. She specializes in Mentalization-Based Therapy for patients and families. In addition to her work on the PACT team, she maintains a private practice for adults and children and is involved in patient education and advocacy on both national and local levels.
