A Cat's Skin, Normal or Not?
A multitude of microorganisms inhabit the skin of the cat. An imbalance of microorganisms can be associated with disease yet the relationship has remained unknown.
At least until recently, when Dr. Aline Rodriguez-Hoffman decided to study the microbiome of skin of normal cats and allergic cats using Winn Feline Foundation funding (
Winn grant MT14-018). She found that there are a lot more bacterial and fungal organisms inhabiting the skin than previously thought. The study provides an indication of skin microorganism imbalance and skin disease.
