A Message from the Dean...

Good News-Bad News-Good News
I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper,  the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. -Joel 2:25

I have noticed over the years that preachers don't seem to talk a whole lot about God's judgment. When things go wrong in the world, we tend to minimize them as a part of "just the way things are. So get on with your life as if nothing is wrong."
Christian Smith, sociologist at the University of Notre Dame, in his 2005 book,  "Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers" co-written with Melinda Lundquist Denton, introduced the term Moralistic Therapeutic Deism (abbreviated MTD), to describe the common religious beliefs exhibited by American youth in a recently conducted survey in the beliefs of youth.
He lists five traits common to the majority of American youth. Here are three of them:
God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions.
The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself.
God does not need to be particularly involved in one's life except when He is needed to resolve a problem.
The problem with this view is that it does not square with the biblical view of God. In wanting to emphasize the Good News of the Gospel, we preachers have ignored or downplayed the bad news. We must remember that the Good News is a response to the Bad News, which must not be overlooked.
For the last couple of months, our Old Testament readings have been speaking of God's judgment. We will continue to hear this Bad News until we get to Advent. Then Advent gives God's remedy to the Bad News, namely, Jesus.
Our reading from Joel also reminds us that God hates evil. I mean, really, look at all the bad things that evil has caused. But, below and before that evil is God's deep, abiding love. In response to God's judgment to remedy evil, God will "repay you for the years that the swarming locusts have eaten." God's great pattern is Good News (Creation)-Bad News (Sin and Judgment)-Good News (Redemption in Jesus).
God's final response to the Bad News of Sin and Judgment is the Good News of Jesus.
