Eagle Scout Connor Welch Honored with Proclamation

Connor Welch, a rising Junior at Hillsborough High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 186, has recently earned the status of Eagle Scout. Connor was was recognized by the Mayor and Township Committee at the July 11th Township Committee Meeting for the tremendous effort and many hours that he devoted to achieving this highly coveted position.
Connor's Eagle Scout Project consisted of refurbishing the landscape outside of the Manville-Hillsborough Elks Lodge by removing the weeds and old plants and replacing them with new plants, weed block and mulch.
Connor served as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for his troop and completed the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society for Boys Scouts of America. Connor's other achievements include attending a week of National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) camp representing his troop, being chosen to take part in the J&J Technology Awareness Program (TAP) and playing on the Hillsborough High School JV Lacrosse Team.
Connor serves as an example to the youth of Hillsborough Township through his high level leadership and community service, and we are very proud that he is a member of our community.

Hillsborough Schools Celebrate Flag Day
Last month, members of Hillsborough's Township Committee participated in the local elementary school's Flag Day Celebrations.

Day is celebrated each year on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the
flag of the United States, which happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

Flagtown Fire Holds Wetdown for Engine 36
Last month, Flagtown Fire held a Wetdown for Engine 36.
The days events included music, food, fun, games and the dedication of their of their new Engine #36.

Are you or your group or organization looking for service hours? Hillsborough Township often has volunteer/service opportunities and is now maintaining a list of individuals, organizations and groups looking to give back to the community.
The purpose of this initiative is to link those individuals or groups in need of completing service hours with the organizations who have service opportunities.

Hillsborough Township's Annual Fishing Derby and Family Camp Out - Friday, August 4th
Registration Now Open
"The Annual Fishing Derby and Family Camp Out will be held on Friday, August, 4th at Ann Van Middlesworth Park," announced Mayor Carl Suraci at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.
"All residents are invited to the Annual Family Camp Out and are encouraged to pack your fishing poles for the David L. Thomas, Sr. Memorial Fishing Derby," added Mayor Suraci.
"This event is a summer highlight for many of our families in the Hillsborough," continued Mayor Suraci.
The Fishing Derby will run from 5-7 pm and the registration fee is $5.00 per child. The Camp Out fee is $10 per person and includes dinner and breakfast. Registration and additional information is available at the Parks and Recreation website.
"We look forward to seeing you all there," concluded Mayor Suraci.

- Coupons are distributed on a first come first serve basis

Flu Vaccination Clinic to be held on September 14th
The Hillsborough Township Health Department and Green Brook Family Medicine are co-sponsoring a Community Flu Vaccination Clinic at the Hillsborough Municipal Building on Thursday, September 14 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. We will have the tetravalent (4 strains) of flu vaccine for all ages, and high dose flu vaccine for Seniors if requested. Vaccines will be available for ages 6 months and up at this clinic.
The Hillsborough Township Health Department will also team up with Walgreens of Hillsborough to sponsor 2 additional flu vaccination clinics on Tuesday, October 3, from 3 to 6:30 PM, and Tuesday, October 10 from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the Hillsborough Municipal Building. These vaccinations will be available for those ages 12 years and up.
Each of these clinics will require health insurance, medicare, or cash/check. Please check on the Health website to be sure your medical insurance will be accepted. If your insurance is not accepted, check the cost of the vaccines on the website. Please go to

It is possible that some people could have a reaction to the flu vaccination. Please review all of the information about flu shots on the health website, or go to

Floods and Flash Floods
On average, more people are killed by flooding than by any other single severe weather hazard, including tornadoes, lightning, and hurricanes. Most of these deaths occur at night, when it is more difficult to recognize flood dangers, and when people are trapped in vehicles. Do you and your family know what to do in case of a flood?
Remember:
-
DO NOT
drive onto a flooded roadway
-
DO NOT
go around barriers
-
DO NOT
drive through flowing water. If you approach a roadway that is flooded,
TURN AROUND - DON'T DROWN.
It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.

Drive with extreme caution if roads are even just wet or it is raining. You can lose control of your vehicle if hydroplaning occurs, which is when a layer of water builds up between your tires and the road, causing there to be no direct contact between your vehicle and the road.
Be Cautious of the Following:
-
Broken or leaking gas lines
-
Flooded electrical circuits
-
Submerged furnaces or electrical appliances
-
Flammable or explosive materials coming from upstream.
Additional Precautions:
-
Before floodwaters crest, turn off the main power switch if you think the electrical circuits are going to be underwater.
Never Touch The Switch While You Are Wet Or Standing In Water
. Do not turn the electrical system back on until it has been inspected by an electrician.

Know what a river height forecast means for your property especially how far your property is above or below expected flood levels.

Know where to go in case of flooding. Remember that you must seek higher ground as quickly as possible, on foot if necessary.

Rotary Fair To Mark Tenth Anniversary This August With Free Friday Fireworks Spectacular
Another record-breaking crowd of over 15,000 is expected to visit the weeklong Rotary Club of Hillsborough's annual Fair, scheduled for August 15 - 20, at the Hillsborough Promenade, 315 Route
206. Now in its tenth year under Rotary leadership, the Fair will again offer attendees a dizzying array of thrill rides, games, food, vendor displays and a special fireworks show on Friday evening.
"Families from all over Central Jersey have made our Fair a must-do family tradition," commented Anthony Franchini, president of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough. "We are very grateful to the community members who have supported this important fundraiser each year."
The Rotary Fair features 21 amusement rides by Majestic Midway Amusements, games by Paladin Amusements, a DJ, a wide selection of food, various displays by area vendors and a petting zoo. Featured rides include the Himalayan, Bumper Cars, Ring of Fire, Super Shot, Sizzler, Zipper, Carousel, Kite Flyer and many more. This year, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday will be pay-one-price ($30) wristband nights. All proceeds raised at the fair are returned to the community as contributions to local community service organizations.

- Must be able to attend John Basilone Parade in Raritan, Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017
- The successful applicant will be invited to attend: Annual Comedy Night Fundraiser.
- The successful applicant will provide assistance, however possible, with Comedy Night Fundraiser

August Senior Center Schedule
The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services have announced the August program schedule. All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed.
All Somerset County-operated senior centers offer a nutritionally balanced lunch, Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée and a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Please make reservations before 10 a.m., at least one business day in advance. Why not invite a friend or neighbor to join you for lunch! Or come earlier in the day and enjoy one of the center's many programs. If you drive or have your own ride, you can attend any of the centers.
