The Beauty Around Us
by Carla Goldberg
Preschool Director

Reggio-inspired learning has opened our eyes to the beauty around us.

The excitement and enthusiasm created in children, teachers and parents by the depth of our public art project has been so inspiring! On field trips we heard the children exclaim: "There's a sculpture! There's another one!" Parents told me about the sculptures their families recently spotted when they were out and about, and so it seems to me that the bridge between school and home has been successfully established in many ways. Creating that bridge is one of the goals of the Reggio approach to early childhood education, and I am already envisioning further possibilities.

A world onto itself: "The Playground" by the Parent/Tot Class

When I visited the early childhood center at Reggio Emilia in Italy in March, I was struck by their powerful studies of things children found in their everyday lives. I understand Reggio-inspired learning as a deep dive into a subject rather than broad, surface learning approach. With our study of sculptures this summer, we explored the Reggio concept of the one hundred languages of children by beginning with drawing an idea, and then moving on to many different ways of expressing that idea, for example sculpting, singing, or dancing out a concept. The children were given the space and time to reflect and go further. Everything is thoughtful and intentional. We raised the children's awareness and opened their eyes to their own community and the beauty that surrounds us.

I don't know yet what other directions we will pursue but I do know how capable and competent children are. They have demonstrated the breadth of what they can do.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to welcoming you back to many more deep dives!

Start with Why - From the Desk of Dr. Jones

Announcing our Interim Principal: Miriam Kass
by Dr. Eliezer Jones
Head of School

In his book Start with Why , Simon Sinek states that "People don't buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it." This idea framed the 2017 Akiba-Schechter Board Retreat at the famous Aqua building downtown this past Sunday. The retreat was a day of sharing Akiba stories that led to smiles, laughs and tears, thinking together and planning our future and answering the "Why" of Akiba. I am so grateful to be working with such a giving, caring and passionate group of lay leaders, who understand that Akiba is, as the poet Yeats said, "not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." We do education differently at Akiba: Ee challenge the status quo; we teach students and not subjects, and we are a model of education for Jewish day schools around the world.

To ensure we always live up to our Why, we must start with having the best educators. Long before I arrived here, the bar for excellent teachers was set high. I saw this when I visited, during the meetings I had with teachers, in the hiring process I have been engaged in, and just walking around the school this summer, seeing the teaching and learning occurring in our fantastic preschool summer program. To this end, I do want to share a significant staffing update that reflects the expectation of excellence our school is known for.

As your new Head of School, I know I have big shoes to fill, which has kept me up at night. I also know that one of my goals as Head of School is to build our capacity for growth. This means my focus will be divided between the internal and external needs of the school, and that leaves some critical holes to be filled. I needed a partner in leadership who would ensure the day-to-day of the academic program would be supported fully when I am focused on those external needs such as development, building relationships and illuminating all that is great about Akiba. For this reason I turned to Miriam Kass, our current Director of Teaching and Learning, and asked her if she would be our Interim Principal. Thankfully she agreed, and I finally got a good night's sleep.

I want to thank Miriam for taking on this role as she continues and expands her leadership at Akiba-Schechter. In practical terms, as Interim Principal, all General Studies staff will report to her. Judaic Studies staff will continue to be lead by and report to Rabbi Holman. Miriam will work collaboratively with Rabbi Holman on the day-to-day operations of the grade school and in supporting all of the staff. Miriam will be the first point of contact for parents, involving me as needed. We also formed an Academic Admin Team made up of Miriam, Carla, Heather, Rabbi Holman, and me that will meet weekly to create a collaborative whole-school working environment in managing and leading the school. To that end, Miriam's title is "Interim" because as a team we are currently exploring the best administrative structure for the school.

Shabbat Shalom, and may all those who are fasting this Tisha B'Av have a meaningful and reflective fast.

More Summer Program Fun
The Adventurers got branches from their field Trips and wrapped them up with yarn. Then they glued each piece on a slat to hold them upright and finally, inspired by their father's day wire and bead sculptures, they added wire strung with beads. See the result below.
On one of their field trips, Big Guys on the Go visited the Smart Museum. They noticed the outdoor sculpture and were very interested in one of the pieces being professionally cleaned. The children worked in groups to choose a piece to sketch, and after observing the different angles, they found a spot to sit and work. Jason from the Smart Museum staff also gave them a brief tour of the Modern Room, and the children asked informed questions and also had great responses to Jason's questions.

Lots of building in Parent/Tot

It wouldn't be summer without fun at the beach, so Big Guys on the Go hit the beach for their last field trip!

Sprucing Up!

Former teacher and parent Mary Bradford and teacher/ Akiba grandparent helped spruce up the Preschool by painting the bathroom.

Also this summer, preschool teacher Angela Moore and Kindergarten teacher Jill Kohl have renovated the large closet upstairs and created a beautiful new work space for children and teachers to enjoy.

Stay tuned for more opportunities to volunteer in the preschool and help with work and improvement projects, and a big thank you to all who pitched in!

Fun Feedback from China!

Remember the group of Chinese early childhood educators who spent a few days visiting Akiba in May? Well, we received the most uplifting message from them on how impressed they were with all they saw and learned in our preschool and how they are sharing their experience back home. See their message and photos on our blog!
